Officials yesterday intercepted two boats carrying a cargo of more than 1000 kilos of cocaine in Las Palmas. The two boats called Marimar II and Kalil arrived yesterday morning in the capital and berthed at the Military Arsenal. The drug squad had been tracking the boats and an exchange was made in the Atlantic via a dinghy.
It has been estimated that 42,000 beds in the Canary islands 25,000 in Gran Canaria destined for tourist use are currently not fulfiling that principal of operation. The change in the law in 1995 determined which apartments were to be used for tourists and which to be used for residents and private letting.
The new water treatment plant being built here in Gran Canaria will not be operative until into next year. Once concluded the water station will produce a daily average of 35,000 cubic metres of water.

The story dominating the local Spanish newspaper today is the story of the Russian space station Mir which is due to crash to earth. The Canarian archiepeligo remains in a zone of high pressure, although there is a slight instability in our atmosphere. Expect plenty of sunshine in the south, however to the north there is more cloud with even the chance of showers in the north and in the north west mountainous regions. There is a good chance of rain tonight. Temperatures will remain smooth and fresh and visibility is good.

Thousands of people took to the streets again yesterday in Leon and Alvareda to watch the great sardine float go past on it's final journey.
The ministry of public works and economy has sanctioned a file against the ship called Anastacia. The ship arrived in Las Palmas on Saturday and failed to declare it's cargo of 632 tons of arms and ammunition.

A ship named Anastacia was detained at the Port Of Light in Las Palmas last night when it was discovered that it's cargo included arms and ammunition. The boat had docked without declaring it's dangerous load.

Jose Luis Gomez picked up the prize for first place for best artistic costume design at the ongoing Carnaval 2001 in the capital Las Palmas. Tonight, the singer Alaska will perform on stage at the San Catallina Park in Las Palmas, while the jury decides the winner of the drag queen contest. 71 floats, 10 cars and 40 saftey officials will drive through the centre. Hot Radio will continue to cover the events of Carnaval 2001, but in much more detail as the carnaval makes it's way down here to the south of the island over the coming weeks.
British actor Jeremy Irons will be the guest of honour at the forthcoming Las Palmas film festival. Although it's not known if he, or Rachel Welch will present the show.

The advisor of Public Works, Antonio Castro yesterday visited the site of the new motorway extension in Gran Canaria. The GC-1 Arguineguin to Puerto Rico strech of motorway is again under construction and is scheduled to be open by the 16th of September 2003. The cost of the construction will exeed 10,000million pesatas, including foreign manual labour, and the hiring of the latest technology in tunneling machinery. The motorway extension is being built in an attempt to relieve current traffic volume problems in the south.
The city council of cleaning in Las Palmas yesterday intensified it's meetings with the town hall as to who becomes the manager of the main dump.
At the ongoing Carnaval 2001 in the capital last night saw the enrollment of the final 34 drag queen candidates. The parade, and the winner will be announced next Friday. Hot radio will cover the events of the Carnaval 2001 in more detail over the forthcoming weeks as the Carnaval makes it's way down here to the south of the island.

73 year old Maria Moran was yesterday crowned Carnaval Queen in the senior citizeans day at the ongoing Carnaval 2001 in the capital Las Palmas. Europes second biggest drugs haul took place yesterday off the coast of Gran Canaria. A fishing boat called Petral was intercepted with a cargo of over 5,000 kilos of cocaine. An important drug trafficking organisation are believed to have been unrigged.
In Spanish news, at least 15 people are feared dead, one be-headed as 2500 police officers try to contain a riot in a Brazilian prison.
Salcia and Utinsa, the main public transport companys in Gran Canaria, have announced to the town hall that they are increase their prices by raising the tarrifs on public bus lines. However the monopoly commission say this could render breaches of contract with the town hall.
Andreas Herera the advisor for transport to the town hall has announced plans for the new
railway service which will run from Agaete to Maspolomas.
