Paul McCartney's taking a sad song and making it better.
The ex-Beatle has announced he's releasing a brand new single to help
raise money for disaster relief in the wake of the September 11
terrorist attacks.
Sales from the cut, titled "From a Lover to a Friend," will be earmarked
for the families of the 300-plus firefighters killed in the collapse of the
World Trade Center. The single, a track off his upcoming Driving Rain
album, is slated to hit radio stations and record stores on October 29.
(The album is due November 13.)
McCartney, whose father was a volunteer firefighter in Liverpool during
World War II, says he was in New York during the tragedies and was
inspired to salute the heroism of those rescue workers who risked their
lives saving thousands of people from the landmark buildings.
"I have great admiration for the courage those guys showed,"
McCartney says in a statement. "I hope that the sales of this new single
will help raise money for the firemen and the families."
In the meantime, with a little help from his friends, the famed
singer-songwriter is busy orchestrating the upcoming Concert for New
York, an all-star relief effort to be held at Madison Square Garden on
October 20.
McCartney has enlisted the aid of fellow '60s rockers like The Who,
Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, as well as Billy Joel, Macy Gray, Bon
Jovi, John Mellencamp, Melissa Etheridge, James Taylor, Marc
Anthony, Five for Fighting and India.Arie. He's also invited the surviving
members of Led Zeppelin to reunite for the show, but no word yet on
whether Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones have RSVP'd.
Meanwhile, organizers announced Tuesday that the Backstreet Boys
were postponing a show in San Diego to perform at the concert.
Jim Carrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Gwyneth Paltrow, John Cusack, Meg Ryan, Susan Sarandon, Adam Sandler,
Mike Myers, David Spade, Julia Stiles, Denis Leary, Michael J. Fox, Jimmy Fallon, Reese Witherspoon
and Ryan Phillippe will also on hand in an unspecified capacity. Members of New York sports teams
will also be in attendance.
The concert event will be broadcast live and commerical-free on VH1, as well as simulcast on radio
stations worldwide and online at AOL.
