Yes, MP3s are legal. However, they can be used illegally. Creating MP3 files from a CD or recording that you own for personal use or using an MP3 file that the song's copyright holder has granted permission to download is completely legal. However, trading MP3s without the permission of the copyright holder is not. Often, it is difficult to determine the legality of a specific MP3 file. If you are not comfortable playing or having a certain MP3 file on your computer then simply delete it. No one is forcing you to keep the file.
