Sandbox Interview @ MuchMusic

Sandbox Interview @ MuchMusic

Performance : The Specter live.
Interview : Mike and Paul w/ Master T

T- So you guys must be quite happy with the new album 'A Murder In The Glee Club' and it's kind of a conceptual album as well right...
P- Yeah
T- ..so did it start off conceptual?
P- No it was actually an after-the-fact, the songs were already written, and then we just decided to instead of just throwing our disk out and putting on a cool name and a cool picture on the cover, we decided to come up with an idea to make it more interesting for the listener to have something to read and, you know.
T- And after the fact you guys have thought about a lot of different areas too, I mean the cd lineris like this whole thread, this whole story.
P- Yeah.
T- You've got like interactivity on the web and everything. You guys have really thought about it.
P- Well, there's just so many disks out there that we just you know, just wanted to make sure that it wasn't just you know chucked into the sea of other disks we just..you know, just an idea we came up with.
T- Definitly going into a second album, a lot of bands don't have that luxury, whether it is a luxury or not.
P- Yeah.
T- What did you guys want to bring to this project?
M- Well you know one of the main things we wanted to do, which was one of the main things we wanted to do on the first album as well was make sure we didn't have 12 songs that sounded basically the same. We wanted to make sure there was a variety on there. I think we did that this time. You know we might have taken it a little further this time then we did on the first album.
T- You also worked with Don Flemming who's worked with Sonic Youth and a whole bunch of other people. What did he bring to your sound?
P- We first heard of Don through the 'frosting On The Beater' album from the Posies and we actually made up a list of the producers we wanted, and his name just kept coming up so you know we knew what he did, so we called him up and asked him if he, you know we sent him our stuff and he liked the stuff and you know, he didn't really get involved in the songwriting he just sort of lets, he helps you develop your songs and comes up with cool sounds and stuff like that. He keeps you on time, on track.
T- Alright, so let's talk about the fact that now people must be comfortable with the fact that 'Yes' there's an established East Coast sound, there's like the traditional bass, the indie rock and then there's straight up rock and roll. Would you guys, I mean obviously you're not on the traditional tip what would you guys...
P- I think we're a pop band, you know, pop rock. Whether there's a scene for it or not you know, maybe we started our own scene. I like to think that we did, or at least helped develop it.
T- So what happens now? Massive promotional thing for you guys?
P- Yeah, Mike and I go across the country for about four weeks doing radio and retail and doing some t.v shows as well.
T- I'd like to thank you for stopping by and performing live for us.
P- Thanks for having us.
T- It's always important to get a quick snapshot of the cd. There you go. Now this is a big thing and as a VJ I would like to take this honor, but I just can't. So I'm going to get you guys to introduce your brand new video. You know you've got to like work it ok? You see my vibe, my energy, now just take my vibe and my energy and just throw it into the video. Let me see it babe. Work it.
M- This camera? Alright, here it is. The brand new video by us, Sandbox, 'Carry' on MuchMusic.
T- That wasn't bad.
P- It's alright.
M- I try.
T- Thanks alot.
P- Thanks.
