Federal Census How to read these records. These records represent Howdyshells I have found in the first 7 censuses of the United States. The first 5 columns are pretty self-explanatory. They are year of census, state, county, last name and first name of the head of the household. Before 1850 only the head of the household was listed by name and each remaining individual was simply enumerated in columns representing their age group and sex. Each census had slightly different age groupings which are noted for each census. People enumerated in these groupings are not always family members as they include any hired help or visiters who may be living on the property at the time of the census. There are also name variations that may or may not be family members. I have included some that I cannot determine for sure if they should be included in our family group but are close enough in name and location to be considered. There are occasionally duplications also.
