A Brief History of Gum

The band has a somewhat capricious beginning.  Steve was sitting at lunch one day and said to Pete, Seth, and Ed, "We should start a band.  Seth learn to play the bass."  Ed agreed to get some drums and learn to play them.  Pete had been teaching Steve to play the guitar.  And so a band was formed.
Ed never got drums and was soon booted as the drummer.  However, Seth did get a bass and learned to play.  We practiced in Seth's garage for about two years, playing mostly Nirvana.  We acquired a new drummer, this time one who had drums. Ryan Schantz was Seth's neighbor and is technically still in the band.  We meant to tell him otherwise, but it never happened and I guess Ryan figured it out when we started playing with a new drummer.
The next drummer in the group was Ken Kratz, who we grabbed after the guys he was playing with dumped him.  This was in the spring of '95.  We took Ken's drums to Seth's house.  This was good for the summer.  And when it got colder, we practiced in Ken's basement.  This was much better than in Seth's garage because you didn't have to worry about your fingers freezing up.  It may sound trivial, but anyone who has tried to play guitar in the cold understands.
This was how things were for quite a while.  We played a couple of concerts, the first being at Seth's 1016th birthday party.  (Don't ask)  It went pretty well.  And in April of '96 we rented the Bally Community Center and played there.  That was one of the best concerts we've done because we had a good attendance and we played well.  Not that we don't usually play well, but since we don't put on a lot of the concerts we play at, we don't get to make the ticket prices.  Such a shame.
We recorded with Dave Antonio in June of that year. A wonderful introduction into the world of recording, but by no means a production worthy session. In August, Seth and Ken decided to leave the band and so Steve and Pete were left to wander the musical wilderness on their own.  Steve Husted knew a bass player who he went to Tae Kwan Do with and so we got Steve Gross.
At this time Imaginary gum was faced with yet again the quest of all quests: Find a Drummer. Steve Gross introduced a whole new set of local drummers (being that he was from a different high school). He said he knew of guy, Joe. He said Joe had the talent and wanted to play. Through a strange turn of events Joe "doe" the first drummer never made it to the band but instead IG was referred to Joe Lutz. Pete, Steve H, and Steve G, met with Joe Lutz. They practiced and for the first time in Steve H's life I think he actually felt that the band he formed some three years ago could put it all together. With the addition of Joe Lutz the band had talent at every position and a solid rythm section.
Well time passes and the guys keep practicing, Steve Gross was learning all of the previous Mulligan bass lines whiile adding his own funk and rap influence on his 5-string. Pete and Steve were writing new material and Joe was getting acquainted. Well now, Seth happens to overhear how well the band seemed to be going. Afterall, Seth, Pete, and Steve H are best buddies. Mulligan liked the idea of being a second vocalist and signs on.
Now the Horn section: I guess we have to say that these guys were added by chance. Imagninary Gum has always been primarily a rock band, it still is. But what a strange blend of rock it is. We never want to be typical (besides it is much more fun to be original). So Pete asks the band "why not add a horn section to on track on our upcoming recording". The end result- Nothing ( the song ). Horns add harmonies that balance vocals excellantly and just give an awesome unique blend to the music. Guest Horn player Robert Goodling appears on the Assorted Flavors album track Nothing adding a trombone to the blend.
So where are we now, well IG fans keep
