HIGHWAY HONKY TONK
LYRICS

HIGHWAY HONKY TONK

Since you left me I've been spending my time
Out on the highway underneath a neon sign
It reads Hilltop Tavern in faded broken blue
It's a rank dank highway honky tonk
But it's my home since I lost you

A highway honky tonk a juke box and a bar
Two old pinball machines sittin against the wall
Turnin clocks and fancy signs of all the big name brews
It's a rank dank highway honky tonk
But it's my home since I lost you

I start the evening sittin at the bar
Feelin tired and contented not carin where you are
But soon the juke box is playing a forgotten melody
And then I remember
I'm so sad and lonely

Sittin there a drinkin listening to the noise
Juke box pinball machines loud girls and braggin boys
Starin at the plastic signs feelin mighty blue
It's a rank dank highway honky tonk
But it's my home since I lost you

The night wears on people come and people go
After a while there's no one left 'cept me and good old Joe
He says it's time for closin I slide down from my stool
But I'll be back tomorrow night
It's my home sice I lost you

A highway honky tonk a juke box and a bar
Two old pinball machines sittin against the wall
Turnin clocks and fancy signs of all the big name brews
It's a rank dank highway honky tonk
But it's my home since I lost you

WHEEL IN THE DITCH

I got a wheel in the ditch and one on the road
Ditch wheel turns the other dont go
Night's comin on and a fog's rollin in
And I aint gonna be where I ought to have been

The little lady left me on a Tuesday night
About a month ago we had an awful fight
I told her I sorry said I'd try to change
She went back to Momma just the same
She called me up about a week ago
She just called up to say hello
I said I'm all right I'm makin out ok
She hung up I didnt get a chance to say

My place got dirty had a woman come in
To to straighten things up and do the cleanin
We cleaned up and when it looked all right
I offered her a beer she stayed all night
Now she's comin in to clean every afternoon
Wearin out my rugs and wearin out my broom
It's been that way for a week or so
But you know it's hard to let a cleanin lady go

Yesterday I met a pretty girl downtown
Went up to her apartment and we didnt come down
I got home this mornin about a quarter past four
My cleanin lady wouldnt let me in the door
I stood there knockin till she let me in
And I found she was doin some entertainin
Nobody left till we saw the sun
But I wasnt to tired to get some cleanin done

I tried to change my ways but the rut's too deep
No matter where I turn I'm losin sleep
Fall out of bed and do it on the floor
Party all night and party some more
Tonight my little lady called up again
She called me up and asked me how I'd been
I said a wheel's in the ditch and one on the road
Ditch wheel turns the other dont go

  PORN ON THE COB

I went down to the x-theater
Saw a movie bout a man and a woman he ate her
He ground her up and he put her in a caserole
Then he took her fourteen year old daughter
I still think about the things he taught her
For me pornograghy's the only way to go

Sweet porn whole porn pop porn too
Hog feed dog feed any porn will do
Porn in the pot porn in the pan
Porn in the bowl porn in the can
Porn on the cob baby porn on the cob
I like my porn on the cob

I had a dream the other night
There was a woman runnin round in an awful fright
From a donkey with a dildo sixteen inches long
Over in the corner was a Nazi soldier
Sittin there grinnin up in shit to shoulders
Pickin and a grinnin and a singin this porno song

I went down to an adult book store
Lookin at the pictures of the adults in the stalls
Thought I'd stay and pay to take a peep or two
I was peepin and pryin leepin and a sighin
Breakin in the breeches I'd just done buyin
When a voice beside me said what do you do

We went down to a punk rock party
Screamin and jumpin up and down then we started
Crawlin on the floor doin the rattlesnake
Creepin and a crawlin rattlin and bawlin
I looked up and saw someone had let the law in
We stood up and started into doin the porno shake

DOGGONE DADDY

Daddy you made Mommy cry
I saw the tear drops filling her eyes
Daddy is Mommy all right
Doggone Daddy why do you and Mommy fight

 Sometimes you hold Mommy tight
Then sometimes Daddy you're like you are tonight
And sometimes you kiss her when she's down
Doggone Daddy why dont you kiss Mommy now

Should I believe the words you say
Its not true Daddy you wouldn't go away
Daddy you're tellin Mommy lies
Doggone Daddy you made Mommy cry

PRETTY BLUE EYES

Pretty blue eyes they give my heart a thrill they always will
I'm here to say it'll be that way till the day I die
Pretty blue eyes sometimes they look sad and sometimes glad
It breaks my heart to be apart or to see them cry

 Somebody loves you darlin
 Somebody cares
And it'll be that way someday
When I'm old and gray and I'll be
There by your side I'll be your man
 And I'll be your fan
In the pure delight of the wonderous sight
 Of your pretty blue eyes

Pretty blue eyes they sparkle and they shine like bubbly wine
They go to my head I always said you'd be a prize
Pretty blue eyes wont our children be as pretty as thee
Dont hesitate I cant wait to see those eye

PHILADELPHIA STEW

Some say that Im a connisiure its true Ive been around
I know of at least one good eatin place in every town
So take my advice its free and its true
There aint nothin quite as tasty as Philadelphia stew

 Philadelphia stew Philadelphia stew
(Repeat last line current verse on chorus)
Keep searchin boys if you aint found it yet
Philadelphia stew boys thats the one to get

I had Louisiana gumbo before I turned thirteen
Got be so excited I hung around in New Orleans
Oh that fishy gumbo it thrilled me through and through
But then I hadnt had the taste of Philadelphia stew

Ive eat New England chowder till I couldnt eat no more
Theres a thousand different recipes along the eastern shore
Ive eaten some so creamy my toes curled in my shoes
But theres nothin that can curl the toes like Philadelphia stew

Ive had Carolina gravey so juicy that I cried
Oh this Carolina gravey feels so good inside
I thanked the cook a dozen times then I bid adieu
Honey it was good but  it wasnt Philadelphia stew

One night in Atlanta , Georgia they served a potent broth
The cook said honey what you had was good old Georgia sauce
I said honey it was might fine but Im a tellin you
The best I ever had was good old Philadelphia stew

I ventured into Jersey on one Sunday afternoon
Some Jersey snapper soup left me howlin at the moon
Comin back across the bridge wonderin what to do
I hurried home and mixed me up some Philadelphia stew

KITTATINY MOUNTAIN

Theres a mountain range in Pennsylvania
That time and the river cut in two
To the north its called the Kittatiny
To the south that mountains called the Blue

Two years a war had been a raging
And a young mans number had been called
He vowed in parting with his sweet heart
To be true what ever should befall

Keep me darlin in your memory
When the moon shines of a summer night
 Out on Kittatiny Mountain
When the full moon shines its brightest light

After the war she received a letter
It was dated some three months before
Her sweetheart lay mortally wounded
In that long embattled Civil War

It read darling Ill not be returning
For I lie here with a fatal wound
But if my dying prayers are ever answered
Well meet again on a Kittatiny moon

That summer up there in the mountains
His words lay heavy on her heart
As evening shadows grew longer
And soon daylight had turned to dark

And the moon came up in all its glory
She went to walk out in its light
And out on Kittatiny Mountain
She met her sweetheart there that night

PROVISIONS

Give me three packs of Camels
A case of Blue Ox
And a six pack of Elephant Ale
And Ill be on my way
Before the morning sun shines

Give me five Puppy Dog Chows
A pack of Red Apple
And a bottle of old Mr Clean
And Ill not delay
Ill be gone without a sign

My list is made out for provisions Ill need
 Im all through
The stars in the sky are beginning to fade
I guess its so long to you

Give me two cans of One Coat
A bottle of Wrench Quick
And a packet of After Glow Tabs
What else can I say

HIGHWAY SONG

I hear that highway callin me
Feel the need for that long dotted line
Got to find ways to get loose from here
And see me some city limit signs
Got to way lay a little ready cash
Just enough to buy me some time
Then I'm gone again free as the wind
Makin that long highway mine

Ooo gonna leave me some rivers and bridges behind
Off in the night where the lights of some bright city shine

Gonna cut me a break a new piece of cake
And get me the wheels and I'll be flyin
Gone again free as the wind
Makin that long highway mine

Get my feet on a floor board of steel
Open highway ahead and behind
Get my hands on a worn steerin wheel
Listenin to them radials whine
I dont know where I'll get my next meal
Just followin those telephone lines
Gone again free as the wind
Makin that long highway mine

DEHYDRATED

Another Saturday night I was the last one to leave
Wern't but two guys left baby both of them were me
No I cant recall what time it was I fell in bed
The first thing I remember baby was the sun beating into my head

And now I'm dehydrated baby cant shed a tear
I was up all night baby Drinking whiskey and beer
And I'm dehydrated babyLeave me alone
Dont you tell me bout your troubles baby I got troubles of my own

Where is the car I dont know baby where is the car
I didnt walk home all that way baby I couldnt walk that far
Look around the back yea well I'll go check and see
But lord stop that hollerin baby baby dont yell at me

Your clothes are a mess they're thrown all over the floor
What the hell did you eat last night you got it all over the door
Oh no oh no now my memory's seepin through
What did I say to that pretty little girl lord what did I do

But never again no baby no never again
I'll stay home from now on baby watch television all weekend
I'll work around the house get up early on Sunday morn
And wake up just as pure baby as on the day that I was born

COOL BREEZE COME A BLOWIN

I walked outside last Sunday
And felt the seasons change
Standing by an old pear tree
I felt a little pain
Summer's almost over
Autumn's movin in
Cool breeze come a blowin
I thought of you again

I walked down through the backyard
To where some grape vines grow
An old barn is standing there
It seems so long ago
The walls are green with ivy
The sky so clear and blue
Cool breeze come a blowin
And I remembered you

My little boy came up a runnin
He grabbed me round the knee
Said Daddy whatcha doin
Wont you come and play with me
He ran on ahead aways
I started home again
Cool breeze come a blowin
And I thought of you again

CARLISLE

 Carlisle Carlisle Carlisle my home
But I left Mom and Daddy
 And proceeded to roam
 Carlisle Carlisle Carlisle my home
But the years came beween us
 I'll see Carlisle no more

My youth was a treasure spent in Carlisle
I think often of it with many a smile
But I've grown accustomed to being away
And I'd probably feel different in Carlisle today

The friends the neighbors the places so dear
How real they seem to me down through all these years
The school yard in summer the old corner store
If they're gone I wont know it I'll see Carlisle no more

I've only these memories I carry along
I've not been back since Mother and Daddy are gone
But when my journey ends and I run out of miles
I pray there's place like my home in Carlisle

    TOO LATE TO WAIT

What the hell are we doin with these crazy atom bombs
When are we gonna put them things away
What good will they do us we all be dead and gone
Leaving the earth a radiated gray
Wont be nothin growin wont be nothin left alive
Man done found the key now we can kiss it all goodbye
Were headed for extinction we didnt even get passed the dawn
Too late to wait we gotta 'liminate the bomb

Everythings been set up the bombs are all in place
How could it happen how can it all be true
Fingers on the trigger could be the end of the human race
Thinkin about its more than we can do
Cant blaim it on Einstien cant blaim it on anyone
Dont look to find the blaim look to shuttin down them bombs
Before the missles whistle and the halocaust is on
Too late to wait we gotta 'liminate the bomb

Right now the Earths in danger and its our precious only home
And were still thinkin were livin in yesterday
We gotta find a new way to do away with these atom bombs
Theyre keeping us with one foot in the grave
Air raid shelters wont help us dont start stockin up the stew
We wont be saved by bein selfish everybodys gettin screwed
And it will be way to late when they turn the sirens on
Too late to wait we gotta 'liminate the bomb

DO IT AGAIN

Is your room  neat yes my rooms neat
Did you brush your teeth yes I brushed my teeth
Go on and do it now go on and do it again
Did you wash your head yes I washed my head
Did you make your bed yes I made my bed
Go on and do it now go on and do it again
Kids today are prone to say
Yes when they dont know
Whats to come or whats been done
The answers quick but the minds too slow
To get them to do what they got to do
Theyre quick to quit when they get half through
Go on and do it now go on and do it again

Is your bike away yes I put it away
Did you do it today yes I did it today
Go on and do it now go on and do it again
Did you comb your hair yes I combed my hair
Where ? not there
Go on and do it now go on and do it again
Psychologys mythology
And you know they got to be raised
But whats clean to them to yous a sin
And there aint no other special way
To get them to do what they got to do
Theyre quick to quit when they get half through
Go on and do it now go on and do it again

Did you hang up your coat yes I hung up my coat
Whats that on the couch some kinda joke
Go on and do it now go on and do it again
Did you wash your hands yes I washed my hands
Did you use soap nope
Go on and do it now go on and do it again
Well I reckon kids were born undid
And it aint never gonna change
They aint quite developed yet
You gotta set them thoughts deep in their brains
To get them to do what they got to do
Theyre quick to quit when they get half through
Go on and do it now go on and do it again

WHAT A WAYS WE'VE COME

When I was a wee laddie my granddaddy
Would take me out on the C&O
And when a locomotive on a fast freight exploded by
He'd hold me up and yell boy there she goes
Big wheels turnin side rods churnin
The noise always made me cry
I'd hold Granddaddy tight till the train went out of sight
Then he'd take me in his lap and dry my eyes

And oh that reminds me of the time
When the railroad used to run
 Down along the mountain side
But now those silver rails are rusty red
 And the railroads almost dead
 What a ways we've come

Summers we'd go fishin cross the tracks and down the ditch
To the Reedy Creek where the rainbows run
We'd sit there waitin countin cars on all the freights
And he could tell me where every car come from
He'd riden all the trains from Santa Fe to Maine
He had a tale to tell for every summer day
Then the year I turned ten I lost my best friend
My old granddaddy passed away

Last year my daughter had a little baby
They named him after his granddad
Yesterday the two of us went to see where I grew up
The visit left me feelin kind of sad
There's no traffic on the C&O we didn't hear a whistle blow
Grass was growin through the old cross ties
The little one was wide awake but never got to see a freight
Granddaddy wasn't there to dry my eyes

CANT SEEM TO GO

Cant live with you cant live without you
Theres nowhere I can turn to
Damned if I do damned if I dont dear
Why was I cursed with loving you

Time spent with you can be like heaven
But more often its time spent below

Wanting to stay and planning on leaving
I should be gone but cant seem to go

BITCH ON BOARD

Bitch on board headin down the highway
Bitch on board trouble goin my
Got that tongue waggin
Hecklin and hagglin
Puttin me in my place
Gettin down all over my case
All I wanted was to take a ride
With my honey by my side
I should have stayed at home
Bitch on board whinnin and complainin
Bitch on board drivin me insane
I think I'll shut this Chevy down
Put her ten miles out of town
Call the dog pound
Bitch on board

Bitch on board lord and how I love her
Bitch on board but now I'd like to shove her
In the trunk to let her rant and rave
She'll take me to an early grave
If I dont get some peace of mind
If she dont quit that naggin whine
I gotta think of somethin quick
That woman's makin me car sick
I might just lose control
Bitch on board I cant do nothin right
Bitch on board just discovered traffic lights
Lord she must think I'm deaf and blind
And I cant read them highway signs
She oughta been a seein-eye-canine
Bitch on board

Bitch on board moanin and a groanin
Bitch on board I should've gone alone
But she dont like me driven by myself
She dont think that I know right from left
But lord she's no help
Bitch on board
All she does is bark a yelp
Bitch on board

FATHER OF THE BRIDE

She was Daddy's little angel from the moment
That she took a breath when she came into this world
Little fingers reached to find someone to hold to
From that moment she was Daddy's little girl

And now the people are all gathered at the church house
    The groomsmen usher them inside
One stands alone out on the sidewalk
He's the father of the bride

The seasons changed she became a little lady
Her life was full of laughter full of tears
Daddy's little angel was growing older
More precious with each addition of the years

And the picnics at the family reunions
All her cousins aunts and uncles she would see
And later round the fire when it got colder
How she'd snuggle in his arms and fall asleep

SUNSET SERENADE

 When day is passing
 And the sun begins setting
 Out on the horizon
 And into the blue
 How finely it changes
 And slowly arranges
 A song of the sunset
 And my love for you

  Gaze your sweet eyes on
  The distant horizon
  Remember the promise
  The promise we made

 No matter how long dear
 If days we are parted
 Remember I love you
 Sunset serenade
