Dwight Gooden
New York Mets, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Pitcher
"Doctor K" blazed onto the major league scene in 1984 with the New York Mets, winning the Rookie of the Year Award with a 17-9 record, a 2.60 ERA, and a rookie-record 276 strikeouts. His sophomore season saw more of the same, as Gooden became the youngest player in history to win the Cy Young Award with a 24-4 record, 1.53 ERA, and 268 strikeouts. Doc's flame began flickering fast, however, as he never saw another 20-win season after 1985, and he faced drug and injury problems. In 1989, Gooden became the third-youngest player to win 100 major league games. A four-time National League All-Star in the 1980s, he has attempted several comebacks, but has never regained the control and speed he once had as a young pitcher with the Mets. Currently with the New York Yankees, Gooden is only a few wins away from a career mark of 200, and currently sits at #37 on the all-time strikeouts leaders list, making him a borderline candidate for Cooperstown.
