Who are the Caballeros?

The Hawthorne Caballeros, sponsored by American Legion Post #199 in Hawthorne, are in their 55th season of competition and have amassed a remarkable host of records.

They have won the DCA World Championship 8 times, the American Legion National Title 15 times, the National Dream Contest 17 times, and the New Jersey State American Legion Title 43 times. They have completed 5 undefeated seasons, consecutively in 1984 and 1985. They have placed in the top 3 placements at the DCA World Championship 28 times in 35 appearances, a clear indicator of the Caballeros consistency for excellence on the drum corps field. In 1989, during DCA's 25th Anniversary season, fans voted the Caballeros their favorite Senior Drum and Bugle Corps of all time.

Special Notice

I am working to start a DCI Corp in the Port Richond Area of Philadelpha. They would by the Port Richmond Muchachos. I am in desperate need of assistance and equiptment. And, at the present time, I am working to get funding, plenty of it to create a corp like the Legendary Hawthorne Muchachos. If you can be of any help, Please e-mail me. at [email protected]

In 1967, while trying to get started with a drum Corp called the "Paterson Crusaders" I met a man sitting inside our practice hall. To me he looked larger in life. I walked up to one of the drum majors in our Corp and I asked;

"Who is that guy?"

Being only a fairly young kid at the time, the Drum major took me by the hand and led me to this man who had been listening so intently to our sorrowful music.

"Cos, meet Al Cutillo, he is on our drum line."

The "Cos" looked at me and smiled.

"Son, it is a pleasure to meet you. You keep working at what you do, because I can see you have the heart."

He patted my head and can rememebring saying to the drum major, "Now that is a good kid."

That was in 1967, 34 years ago, but, even now, it was like yesterday. When the
Cos left I asked my major again, who was he really. He looked at me and smiled and said;

The "Cos is why Drum Corp is what it is. He IS drum corp.

I look back on years, days in the Muchachos, even as late as 1997, after I suffered a stroke which left me in a wheelchair. I came to the Grand Prix. and even after 37 years, his silence, yet his rememberance, If you see pictures of the front line, he WANTED me to sit next to him, to enjoy the music that makes me laugh, makes me cry and makes me remember.

I was at the 2001 show, meeting up with Muchachos I had not seen in years, and it brought back memories of a friend I made that Autumn day in the 60's, A friend I pray who is in his glory, seeing all of the unity and the love that he had brought out.

Cos, My love goes out to you, as do my tears and the pain in my heart of missing you.
