Principles of Discipleship

Four Phases of Calling

  1. Salvation (John 1:35, you need to know Jesus as your savior)
  2. Ministry   (Matthew 4:18-22, as Peter and Andrew followed Jesus when they were fishing)
  3. Internship (Matthew 10, disciples were sent out to short-term ministry and given powers and authority to do their job)
  4. Sending (Acts 1, after empowered by Holy Spirit, disciples began their ministry)

How disciples are chosen?

  1. Sovereign decision
  2. After a night of prayer of Jesus
  3. To be trained
  4. To be sent

Disciple - learners

Apostle - sent ones

Five manifest problems when discipling an individual:

  1. Spiritual Understanding – Jesus overcame this by teaching and being patient. (Mt 15:5, Luke 18:31-34, John 13, Matt 16, John 21)
  2. Humility – Jesus overcame this by being an example to his disciples.  (John 13)
  3. Faith – Jesus overcame this by performing many miracles and mighty deeds.  (Mark 4:40, 16:14)
  4. Commitment – Jesus overcame this by praying for them (Luke 22:31-32)
  5. Power – Jesus overcame this by encouraging them to believe (Mt 17:14-21)

Four aspects of discipleship:

  1. Social – to be able to talk about God
  2. Support – be able to help your ministry, encourage
  3. Counseling – to correct, to give wisdom, scenario of ministry, people skill
  4. Confession – be able to confess to one another

Principles of Leadership

4 passages that lists the disciples:

§         Matthew 10:2-4 (the first is Simon)

§         Mark 3:16-19 (And Simon he surnamed Peter)

§         Luke 6:14-16 (Simon whom he also named Peter)

§         Acts 1:13 (upper room)

Application:

§         Organization & Administration are healthy and necessary components to ministry.

§         It is OK to be closer to certain individual than other in ministry.  It has to be balanced.  No exclusion!

§         If a leader falls, people may never forget about it.  (es. Judas Iscariot)

§         Your ministry will be flavored/tempered by how God dealt with you.  (Mat 9:9)

§         It is OK for some individuals to be used at different level than others  (Exodus 18, Mt. 25:15)

Characteristics of a Leader as seen in the life of Peter

1.     Leaders ask questions

2.     Leaders are loyal

3.     Leaders position themselves in the middle of activity

4.      Leaders are tempered by life’s experiences

§         Peter received Revelation (John 6, Mt 16:7)

§         Peter received Reward (Mt 16:18-19)

§         Peter experienced Reproof (Mt 16:21-23)

§         Peter experienced Rejection (Mt 26,33)

§         Peter experienced Recommissioning (John 21)

5.  Leaders learn the right lessons

Peter had a problem with…             Learned his lesson as seen in…

  1. Submission (Mt 17:24-27)                       1 Peter 2:13-16 “13Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 16Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God”.
  2. Restraint (Jn 18:10-11)               1 Peter 2:21-23 “21To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.  22"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."[1] 23When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly”.
  3. Humility (Jn 21:18-19)                1 Peter 5:5 “5Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."”
  4. Sacrifice (Jn 21:18-19)                 1 Peter 4:12-16 “12Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name”.
  5. Love (Jn 21/13:21)                         1 Peter 4:8 “8Above all love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins”.
  6. Courage (Jn 21)                             Acts 3 & 4 (This is after he was empowered by the Holy Spirit at the Pentecost.  He was not afraid to preach the good news in spite of persecution.)

Conclusion:

§         Authority is attractive!

§         A leader is held to a higher moral standard because of the very essence of his position.  James 3:1Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly”.

§         Thought + Time = Action Ephesians 4:17-1917So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more”.

§         “I never thought this would happen to me!”

§         “God’s way!” (Is the best way!)

§         God can/will reveal the tightest sealed sins in your life.

§         Your actions affect others!

§         Fallen leadership may cause people to question good leadership.
