Aim: To show you that it can be useful to keep an eye on your stats, as this can point to areas of weakness in your game.
A short note this, but an obvious one, run Links and click Options / Player Stats..then have a look at your stats and keep an eye on them, see where your strengths and weaknesses are......are you missing the fairway too much ? is it your approaches to the greens that are all wrong ? are you taking too many putts ? how do you play the par3, 4 and 5's ? ... these stats are for your benefit, so make sure you use what they tell you, so you can practice the things you need to more often...I hope to include some stats at the bottom of this report so you can see the sorts of numbers that lead to great scores and you can see where you need to sharpen up.A great idea, which I use a lot is to create a new player from scratch. Now play all the courses you have one by one, and play one round for each wind setting, try to randomise the greens. Don't allow mulligans, and now when you've got through that have a look at your stats, these ought to really represent your game in all conditions on all the courses.First of all, are there any obvious problems ? Are you hitting the fairways enough ( 80%+ is fine), are your greens in regulation about the same, are you taking too many putts ( 30+ would be a worry), are you miles from the pin on the par3's. Look at your average scores for par3,4 and 5...are you missing out on the par5s, where you need to be averaging 4.something...are you making a mess of the par3's ? If your score for par4's is bad (over 4) then you may have more work to do..these are the most common holes and form the basis of most courses. How do you correct these faults ? If you are missing too many fairways have you tried using a shorter club off the tee more often ? If you miss greens, are you being too aggressive with the pins, could you play safer to the middle of the green sometimes ? Is your snap just too messy to hit irons cleanly, meaning a lot of par3's missed ? If you write down your scores you can also see right away, do you have a problem with the wind ? how about breezy ? practice rounds in the conditions you struggle in ( believe it or not, my mate Wils was fine in the wind but could never get the monster score in no wind, so its not always the hard conditions that get you)...practice putting if there are too many in a round. Now look at your club stats and in particular the "%age hit safe"....are there clubs that you are making a mess of, could you try hitting to a different area and using your better clubs...I bet you if you've taken my advice on a stock shot and you use it properly, then the stats for that club are good ! As a final check, look at your best 10 and worst 10 scores....are the top ones easy courses or did you play well there? Try playing the rounds again that you did worst on, and see if you can improve or maybe its just a tough course, in short, use your stats to your advantage, it's all a learning process !
Top Tips:
Not a bad idea to create some new players and start afresh, dont take mullies etc and really watch those stats
Play a round in each condition (windy, breezy, none) on all the courses you have one by one
Address the areas of weakness in your game and adjust your shot selection to match your strengths
