The game starts out with a young boy walking across a bridge in front of a waterfall. Losing his balance, he falls to the ground below. His friends desert him, and the only way he can return to his village is by taking a sword to cut down some bushes. Upon returning to his village, he discovers that he has removed the Mana Sword, a sword that has been protecting the village for many years. The villagers blame you for the loss of their protection, and exile you from the village. Only you, the Mana Knight, could remove the sword from its resting place, and you must recharge the sword, to bring peace to the world.

Found in the Dwarf Cave at Gaea's Navel, the sprite is your attack magic user. He starts out as a con artist, trying to get your money, but he joins up with you when he realizes that you can help him get back to his home. Upon reaching his home, and finding it in ruins, the sprite decides to help you fight the Empire.

The Girl is your healing and defensive magic user. She joins up with your party at Pandora to find her boyfriend, Dyluck, who (conviniently) keeps disappearing right before you can rescue him, so the girl continues adventuring with you.

Watts
Watts is the weapon-smith from Gaea's Navel. He likes to travel a lot and has a habit of appearing in almost every town. :-) Wow! How remarkably convenient. Take your weapon Orbs to Watts and he can reforge your weapons into stronger forms.

Neko
This shopkeeping cat is wandering the world, selling his goods in the middle of dungeons. He also can save your game. Neko sells his goods for twice the price as in a normal shop, and pays you less than a real store when you sell, but he is found in some convienient locations. He also will sometimes sell items that can't be found elsewhere.

Flammie
Flammie is your loving and loyal dragon. You find him as a youngster in a cave. King Truffle names him Flammie and says that he will care for him. When Flammie grows up, King Truffle brings him to you and gives you the Flammie Drum, so you can call Flammie when you need him. (Flammie is the best character in the game, IMHO.)
