Unknown is my Destiny
by The Unknown Samurai

The evening sunset gave way to the twilight. The Guard was set, the fires lit, and they soon began to chase the dampness from those sitting near them.
"Hei, My Brothers and Sisters. Come, sit by the fire and warm Yourselves and I will try to amuse You with a tale of high adventure," The Venerable Storyteller called. He adjusted his stool, waited for the gathering Samurai and Samurai-KO to settle in, cleared His throat, then began.
"Some say He was Ronin, outcast in His own land. A drifter, no Family, no great deeds to speak of. But I tell You," said the Storyteller, " just because it hasn't been written in the halls of glory, does not mean His deeds are any less significant..."

The wind was from the North blowing down upon the caravan that wound it's way slowly through the pass. They had traveled all day and the beasts of burden heavily laded with the Family's belongings were almost at their limit. The Bandits had chosen their time and place well.
Lt. Nakodo knew this was not the place to bed down, and began to encourage His Charge to go just a little further to the safety of the forest. Turning His Mount and riding down the column, the words barley escaped His Throat when He felt a hideous thump in the small of His back.
He instinctively reached around to try and pluck the arrow out, but in the same instant, was struck twice in the chest. He wavered and fell. The screams and shouting precluded the slaughter as there were too many arrows, too much suprise. Soon after, the Bandits went about the ugly business of scavenging.
Early the next day the vultures were already at work on the striped and mangled corpses. The Monks who came upon the ghastly scene were sickened by the smell, but endured to search and give burial.
Hoshi Sutero was finishing His task when He heard the slightest whimper coming from the bushes only a few yards from the grave He was working on. He signaled to the other Monks He was investigating as He moved stealthily closer to the sound. He found another victim laying naked in the grass. Another sound, this time just to His left. He probed a pile of leaves and to His amazement, found under them a Man child buried in a shallow hole.
"The Woman must have hid the child just before She was slain Master," deducted Sutero. "And look, the stones on this chain around His neck. The symbols of Dragon and Lion clan."
"Hmmm...House of Mirumoto and Ikoma...But this caravan was guarded by Members of the Lion Clan only, I see no Dragon among the dead," pondered Master Chejwa, " and They did not go quitely, it is obious it cost the Bandits many lives in exchange for their booty."
"We will solve this mystery as to this Little Unknown Samurai's Identity another day, let us depart, Our work is done here."
"But what will become of the Child Master?" asked Sutero.
"For now, He will make a most excellent Monk," smiled Master
