To
who ever finds this book . It is the diary of
Thomas son of Oberon and Mabh, a child of Amber.
What is Amber? Who am I? Where am I from?
All
will be explained in full in the following. Lets
start with
Amber. It is the center of what you would
call dimen-
sions, what we call Shadow. We call them
Shadows
because they are Shadows of
Amber. We, me and
others of the blood of
Amber, can travel through
Shadows and find our hearts desire.
But we seldom
stay away from Amber for long with out good reason.
There is nothing like Amber it
is a drug, a lover, an
addiction. All of the blood are drawn back to
Amber.
Me, I'm Thomas Oberon's seventh
son.Where i am
now I do not know. I could be dead,Lost
in shadow
or maybe even the ruler of Amber
who knows what
the future holds for me.
Day 1:
I enter
Dworkin's lab, a dusty and messy room
high up in one of Castle Amber's
towers. There are
piles of papers and other flotsam
piled all over the
various tables and workbenches, and
even a num-
ber of piles
on the floor. A couple of easels with
unfinished artwork stand in the room, and
I can see
Dworkin's hunched back behind
one of the work
benches. I hear him muttering to himself ."Blood
and
bones, blood and bones. By
the hair on my chin."
Suddenly, he seems to notice my presence, and
with
a grunt and a cloud of dust stands up.
His wild gray
hair unkempt and he wears a stained smock. "What!
Oh, oh, Markus, is it? What do you want?"
his blue
eyes peer at me sharply. "It's Thomas," I say,
"What
are you doing?" I casually
walk behind the work
bench glancing down at the papers
he was mussing
with. "What am I doing, the boy asks.
Hee hee hee
hee."The giggle incongruous coming from the twisted
old man's lips. The papers appear to be
mathematic-
al diagrams of some kind, but of
a complexity that
baffles me. What could it be? I have never
seen any
thing like it. What could I use it for?
"They appear to be mathematical
models," I say.
"Models indeed!" Dworkin practically shrieks,"The
keys to the kingdom! Ha,ha,yes,kingdom.Empire!"
Hummm That could be useful!Taken aback, I ask,
"The kingdom of Amber?"Dworkin suddenly grows
calm, "My boy, if knew what I knew... "He turns
to
his work, and nothing you say will elicit a further
re-
sponse. I look at the
papers. They are vaguely
disturbing, almost as if they twist and
change while
you watch, but you cannot consciously detect
any
difference.Dworkin is muttering again as you
leave,
"Yes,yes. You have to expect some fragmentation
to occur. Even Shadows of it!
The danger could
be great..."Humm must watch him he maybe work-
ing on something that would endanger my plans.
A
shudder passes through my body as I remember
why I don't like talking to the old coot.Descending
the long staircase from Dworkin's
tower room, I
turn and follow
a long narrow hallway to the serv-
ant's annex. Standing and briefing a staff member
is
Laurent,the castle's chief of staff.He turns
as I come
up.
"Ah, greetings, Highness. Allow
me to introduce
Colin. He is to be your
new personal servant. I
regret to inform you that the man
who previously
held the post left our employ while you were
away"
Colin, a small man of average stature, bows
deep-
ly. "It will be my pleasure to serve
you,Highness."
Looking pleased, Laurent takes
his leave. "Your
quarters are as you left them,
Highness. Is there
anything you require?" "Walk with me,"
I say, and
begin the trip to my rooms.
Colin quickly falls in
step. "Tell me, what have my siblings
been about
while I was away?" "Most of them were out
of the
Castle as well, Highness. I believe Reyna
was the
only one present for the majority of your
absence.
She put on the usual balls and salons,as you
know
she is fond. " We arrive at your rooms,
and enter.
They are indeed just as I Left them. I
tell Colin "I
want no one in here with out my say so. I do
some
experiments from time to time and
they could be
destroyed or hurt some one if they were interrupt-
ed." he bows and replies, "As you wish, Highness.
I shall ensure that your rooms
are not disturbed
even by cleaning staff unless you instruct
me other
wise."I then tell him "I would like something
to eat."
He returns soon thereafter with a
cold meal, ex-
plaining that the kitchen was closed.
"I shall retire
for the evening unless you
have further need of
my services,Highness.""That is fine. "Colin leaves
and I then go in search of my brothers and sisters.
As I pass the library, I recognize the voices
emerg-
ing from within. It sounds as if three of your
siblings
are there: Alden, Markus, and Luther.
I head towards
the door. The door suddenly
opens and Luther emerges, walking quickly down
the hall. Inside,I
can see Alden and Markus watch-
ing Luther leave from
inside the library. As the
door closes,Luther looks up and sees me standing
at the end of the short hall. I say
"Hello brother"
Smiling "Having Troubles?"Luther Said "And if
I
was, it wouldn't be anything you
could handle,"
Luther replies
with
an icy stare, "Now is there
anything I could help you with or
can I finally
find just a bit of solitude. You'd think
we live in a
one room cottage." I reply "As you wish brother."
A ghost of a smile crosses my face... I
bow and
turn and continue on my way. I head back
to my
room to check on something and find
a note on
the door from Reyna about a Ball
she is putting
on with a theme of "Garden of Amber Delight".
I
send her a note telling her
I would be delighted
to attend. |
