The Axeman has more hit points and attack strength than the Clubman. The Axeman cannot be upgraded. However, you can research the Short Swordsman, which is stronger than the Axeman...Other infantry units include the,Broad Swordsman,Long Swordsman, and Legion.
Researching Leather Armor, Scale Armor, and Chain Mail increase armor. Toolworking, Metalworking, and Metallurgy increases attack strength. The Bronze Shield and Iron Shield increase piercing armor.
