The Bowman is the weakest of the Archers and cannot be upgraded. You can research the Improved Bowman which is stronger. Other archers include the Chariot Archer, Horse Archer, and the Elephant Archer.
Researching Leather Armor, Scale Armor, and Chain Mail increase armor. Alchemy increase attack strength. Woodworking, Artisanship, and Craftsmanship increase range.
