As Nintendo's first leap into the 3d world, the 64 did pretty well. The new style of controller and the Nintendo name, attracted gamers. The four controller slots made it easier for multiplay.(Who hasn't had a party with a PSX and had to rent a multi-tap?) It did well at first but just turned sour once it turned it's game production to kiddy games. The no loading was good and the graphics were smoother and less pixelated than PSX but the way of the cartridge was doomed to follow the path of the dodo bird. CD had A LOT of advantages; longer game play, voice instead of long text to read and it's much smaller and easier to carry. After Goldeneye most of the 64's games were either a flop or way too kiddy. The 13 button controller also has it advantages and disadvantages. Advantages; -More settings making it easier for different types of grips -Z button underneath made ease of single player shooting games -Form of the Controller permitted comfort for left and right-handers Disadvantages; -Too complicated for some "simple" people -Using views with the C-Buttons is difficult and confusing -Some buttons go unused in many games

Here's a little show off of what nintendo is up to these days.
