Enable Faster Internet Connection Speeds
Improve Windows Perfomance

 ENABLE FASTER INTERNET CONNECTION SPEEDS
All Underlined Blue text are links to show you how to do this correctly.

Benefit:
Well, the higher the level of data allowed in & out of your machine, the more you will be able to take advantage of your Internet connection. Windows is  not configured to take full advantage of broadband service! I used this tweak and now I push 5 times faster upstream and downstream. It is SIMPLE & EASY if you just follow the directions.

Simple issue:
The RWIN is a Windows, TCP/IP registry setting that regulates/limits data transmission sizes that can go out, and come in, over your internet connection. Windows limit is not optimized/set for broadband.(For more info about RWIN:)

Simple fix:
Adjust your registry so the RWIN limit is greater, allowing bigger in & out size limits for your valuable data!! This is eazy because the fine folks at dslreports.com have already done the tweaking, all you have to do is download the file and double-click on it (*****AFTER YOU BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY*****). It makes the proper changes in the registry.
!!!!WARNING!!!!
Messing with you registry CAN BE dangerous!!!! BUT, it is no problem if you just BACK IT UP, & do not try to manually edit your registry.

FIRST:
Run a speed test <----CLICK TO FIND OUT HOW
Record you up/down speeds prior to doing the tweak so you can see if it helped.
Make sure you record your up & down kbps!!

SECOND:
Click on "Graph" This will show you a graph of where you are, compared to other methods of internet conectivity. Also, if you are not "optimized", it will say so in the top/middle section (above the graph), click on the link that directs you to the tweaking section.
or
You can just run the "Is your PC configured for broadband?" test, & see what it tells you. It will probably say: "Your RWIN XXX is too low" or "Your RWIN XXX is much too low"

THIRD:
Now scroll down & click on the link next to "Your RWIN XXX is too low" or "Your RWIN XXX is much too low" (whichever one came up in your results, although either one will bring you to the same file). It will bring you to the file/download you need. Get the one that is for your Windows OS. Most of you will need to get the "rwin98-l.reg" or rwin98-h.reg"  file because most of you have windows 98. Download it to your desktop so you can easily find it.
BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY! BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY! BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY!

BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY!   <----CLICK TO FIND OUT HOW
Name it "REGBU_today'sdate" or something to that effect. NOW you can screw with your registry all you want! FUN! FUN! If you jack it all up, you just have to go double-click the "REGBU_today'sdate" file you exported out of the registry & reboot. BUT, I wouldn't recommend you do anything other than the following:

FIRST:
MAKE SURE YOUR REGISTRY IS BACKED UP!!
Go to the "RegBU-Tweaks" folder & make sure there is a file called "REGBU_today'sdate" there. The icon for the file will have a little building block looking pic.

SECOND:
Double click on the file you downloaded. Won't look like anything fancy happened, but somethin did.

THIRD:
REBOOT! Changes to your Registry only take effect after a reboot.

FINALLY:
Run the speed test agin!!   <----CLICK TO FIND OUT HOW

Use the same test location you used the first time & try to do it w/in 30 mins or so of your "before" test.
Any improvements?? If so, SUPA-DOOPA. IF not, no biggie... nothing tried, nothing gained, eh? If no improvements, you can just leave everything alone.

IF you got WORSE down/up speeds, RESTORE YOUR REGISTRY. Just double click on the backup you made, & reboot. I  doubt you will get lower speeds.

You can also run the "Is your PC configured for broadband?" test agin:

It should now say:

* Please wait .. collecting data
* Your RWIN reads as 64240     <-------Or something to that effect
* All tests passed perfectly.
* We recommend you leave everything as it is!
* End

(The actual RWIN # may vary, but it's the 2nd & 3rd line that you really want to see). If it tells you about another problem, then just scroll down the page & find the link to the tweak.

 IMPROVE WINDOWS PERFORMANCE

There are some little known Windows utilities that are included in Windows itself, to help you improve perfomance and speed while booting or running programs. If you DO NOT feel comfortable messing with the very files that make your computer work, I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT try any of these utilities.

ALL OF THESE UTILITES CAN BE ACCESSED BY CLICKING , GO TO RUN,  THEN TYPE IN THE UTILITY NAME JUST AS YOU SEE IT BELOW IN RED.

CLEANMGR : Clean Manager, Windows disk cleanup utility. This utility will allow you to remove old and temporary internet files, empty your recycle bin and remove Windows components you do not use. You almost cannot do any damage to your computer with this utility, so I encourage you to use this one.

ALCHUNIN : Clears all Uninstall data no longer needed. No explanation needed. You can run this program but, any unneeded uninstall data most likely would have been removed when you uninstalled the program(s).

TUNEUP: Maintenance wizard, will run DEFRAG, CLEANMGR, and SCANDISK at a certain time that you set it for on a regular basis. You almost cannot do any damage to your computer with this utility, so I encourage you to use this one.

SCANREGW : Registry checker, This utility will check for errors in your registry and tell you if the registry has had a recent back up or not, and then proceed to ask you if you would like to make a new back up. You almost cannot do any damage to your computer with this utility, so I encourage you to use this one.

DEFRAG : EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT THIS ONE IS, defragments all files on your hard drive and reorganizes them in such a way, that Windows can get to the needed files quicker. Works wonders if you never ran this before, run it regularly and wont see much change BUT, it will keep your system nice and tidy. You almost cannot do any damage to your computer with this utility, so I encourage you to use this one.

SCANDISK: Disk surface checking utility, this WONDERFUL little utility will check the surface of your hard disk and check for bad sectors on your hard drive. Nice utility for early warning crash alert. You almost cannot do any damage to your computer with this utility, so I encourage you to use this one.

DXDIAG : Direct X Diagnostics utility. A great little utility to check to see if direct x is working properly, soundwise and videowise. You almost cannot do any damage to your computer with this utility, so I encourage you to use this one.

THESE LAST 4 UTILITIES ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND MAY POSSIBLY BE DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE IF NOT USED CORRECTLY.

MSCONFIG : Microsoft Configuration, This utility actually gives you the ability to control which programs will run on boot, along with giving you the ability to specify which command lines within win.ini, system.ini, config.sys, and autoexec.bat  run on boot. You can can even tell Windows which system boot files to run on boot. This program can be VERY destrcutive if not used carefully. "If you DO NOT feel comfortable messing with the very files that make your computer work, I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT try any of these utilities".

WINIPCFG : Windows IP Configuration, this nifty little utility allows you the ability to release and renew your internet adapter, and Internet Protocol Address. This will also show you your IP address, your Internet Host's IP address and you can also allow IP routing though this utility. Basically if you knew how to do it, instead of running an "IP Spoofer", (a program that broadcasts a fake IP which most often causes lag), you can "bounce" (route) your IP sevral times through different servers. Hackers? No longer a Problem. I said it before and I will say it again "If you DO NOT feel comfortable messing with the very files that make your computer work, I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT try any of these utilities".

REGEDIT : Registry Editing Utility. Utility that allows you to change memory values, locations, and program data of most of your installed programs. I said it before and I will say it again "If you DO NOT feel comfortable messing with the very files that make your computer work, I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT try any of these utilities".

SYSEDIT : System Command Line Boot Editing Utility. Utility that allows you change the command lines that will run within Win.ini, system.ini, config.sys, and autoexec.bat files during boot up by adding or removing text within those lines. DO NOT MESS WITH THESE FILES UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. I said it before and I will say it again "If you DO NOT feel comfortable messing with the very files that make your computer work, I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT try any of these utilities".
