Riven's Rand Miller Opens Up is a BIG interview with Rand Milller. I won't post it here because of its length, so just click on the link to it.

This is a excerpt from a post made by John Marvin on the Riven Lyst.

One of my hobbies is professional sound recording, so I subscribe to two magazines that many of you probably are not familiar with: "Mix" and "Recording". Anyway the May 1998 issue of Mix had an article regarding the sound production for Riven, based mostly on an interview with Tim Larkin. The June 1998 issue of Recording had interviews with Tim Larkin and Robyn Miller. Both interviews are focused on the kind of stuff people who are into sound like to know about. The interview with Tim was focused on the sound effects and ambients, since that is what Tim worked on. The very short interview with Robyn was focused on the music, since Robyn was primarily responsible for that.

There is one thing in the Recording interview with Tim that is of general interest. It regards the DVD version of Riven (quoted without permission from Recording magazine, but hopefully small enough that it qualifies under the fair use clause):

Tim: For the DVD version we're going with MPEG, which sounds a lot better. We wanted to use MPEG for the original CD-ROM release but were stuck on some implementation issues. Since then we've resolved the issues we needed to resolve, like the performance hit from decompression, so our new DVD releases will use MPEG.

I did the first surround mix for testing just last week at a studio in San Francisco called the Outpost. We mixed down to six channels. We started with the maglev car rides between the islands. If we decide it's going to work and that it's feasible -- that's not assured yet -- we'll do the maglev car rides, the lumber-car ride, the closing sequence, and maybe the opening as well. We're going to keep standard stereo for the rest. Maybe Dolby Surround stereo, but no more than that.

Recording: You won't be putting surround in the rest of the game? Things like the Temple room where you get out of the chair and you hear the cage closing behind you -- one would think that sort of thing was just made for surround.

Tim: The problem is that you can't do surround in an interactive environment. The maglev rides are ideal, both because of the motion, and because the player gives up control of the game at that point and watches the movie go by for a minute. Computers today aren't fast enough to allow for interaction with the game and full surround decoding all at the same time. A live 5.1 mix is too much to deal with.

The Sequel to DVD

DVD Version Of Riven To Be Demoed At E3
[Updated: 1:30PM] A DVD-ROM version of Riven, first seen in a brief presentation at January's Macworld Expo, will be demonstrated at this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Atlanta, according to the game's publisher, Red Orb Entertainment. The special version of the hit game, which Red Orb expects to propel DVD-ROM sales among home PC users in much the same way Myst helped CD-ROM drive sales, features "significantly enhanced" audio, recompressed video for greater clarity, and an exclusive "Making Of" video. In addition, gameplay will absent of the frequent interruptions seen in the CD-ROM version, thanks for the expanded storage capabilities of DVD disks.

Meanwhile, Red Orb says E3 attendees will also be treated to a special DVD version of The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time, as well as discussion from Broderbund executives on DVD technology and Red Orb titles.

[Update:] According to a statement issued by Red Orb this afternoon, the DVD editions of both Riven and The Journeyman Project 3 will be available only for Windows 95 machines when released this August. Macintosh versions could be forthcoming, but the company will not be showing them at E3 this week.

Old News

I found a very funny news report at GameSpot, just be sure and notice the date of the article.
May 20,1998,
In a recent post to the Riven Lyst RAWA confirmed that the report about Cyan's future game(see the report on May 19,1998) is not true.

-----------------
Look, I don't want to burst any bubbles, but I don't want y'all to get
your hopes up unnecessarily either. Rand saying that "a sequel is not
out of the question" is a pretty big jump to "the sequel to the sequel is
official".

I'm not sure where this person got their information, but we don't have
plans to announce anything at E3.

Further proof to not believe everything you read.

For the record, we are very interested in continuing the D'ni universe,
and are in the initial design stages of our next project. But our future
projects will probably not be directly related to Myst or Riven.

But that's all I can say about it at this time.

This recent article about Cyan's future game is up at Fastest Game News Online.

Riven Sequel: Down Amongst The D'ni

PC: Riven: The Sequel To Myst is to get a sequel -
it's official. Rand Miller has previously stated that
although he and his brother Robyn wouldn't do
another Myst or Riven sequel together, a sequel
without Robyn on board was not out of the question.
Details of the sequel are expected to be announced at
E3 - the game is thought to be set amongst the people
of the D'ni.

This could just be a rumor, but then again you never know.
May 18,1998,

Here is a recent post Doug McBride, who runs The Riven Lyst, concerning Gordon Currie current state :

I spoke with Gordon briefly on Friday, and at that time he was feeling better. He is finally out of the hospital, and when he spoke, he was at his Mother's home in Victoria, BC. He had plans to fly home to his own family either yesterday or today (monday). He was going to call me at home this weekend, but I guess he didn't get around to it. He still hasn't resubscribed to the Lysts, but he probably won't until later this week.

He did get Lee's email about the "Get Well" webpage we'd set up for him, but he didn't have a chance to look at it yet. Still, the fact that the Lysters did something like that seemed to touch him. His parent's only have one phone line, and besides the long distance he'd be calling to connect to his internet account at home, he doesn't want to tie up their line.

I'm sure we'll all hear from him soon. I'm very excited for him to get feeling better so we can collaborate on putting details of our Cyan trip online.
