Surrounding

I.gif (1114 bytes)ntermediate players must be able to use the surroundings without thought. Finding choke points and safe spots are essential in this game, especially if you are in the lower levels of the dungeon. This game is based on a square patterned floor. Both you and the enemy can only occupy one square at a time. The following picture shows what I mean.

Notice that only one enemy is attacking. The rest must go around the obstacles.

C.gif (1196 bytes)hoke points are places where only a few enemies can come through. The best choke points are doors. Stand just behind the door and take on the enemies one by one. This make take some time but it works and it saves on a lot of health potions.

S.gif (1195 bytes)afe points are corners and behind objects. It is risky but staying in the corner and attacking can help you out. I have taken on a hoard of black knights this way a survived. Because you are in the corner, only 3 enemies can attack at the same time, whereas if you are in the open, there are 8 possible attack positions. The only downside to attacking from the corner is that it requires you to give up the ability to run. Hiding behind objects is useful because it takes away a position where the enemies can attack. As one gets better at this game, one can see these safe spots much easier.

O.gif (1200 bytes)ne of my favorite tactics is to stand behind a wall and wait for the enemies to come around the corner. Then I let lose with a onrush of arrows or magic. With the warrior, this tactic doesn't work so well but the warrior can stand get a the corner of the wall a use an axe to hack away at the enemies as they come by.

I.gif (1114 bytes)f all else fails, RETREAT. There is no shame in running in you cannot win. Keep running until you find a good choke point or even back to town if you have to!
