Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, whose best-selling novel "Solaris" has become a sci-fi film starring U.S. actor George Clooney, has lamented the movie's focus on affairs of the heart rather than the head.
"The director has focused on the tragic love of Chris and Harey. Emotions have triumphed over intellect," the acerbic writer said of the treatment of his challenging novel about astronauts besieged by memories they would rather repress.
However, Lem praised the movie's creativity and suggested it was too subtle for the mass audience used to Hollywood films.
"Solaris", directed by Oscar-winning Steven Soderbergh, is vying for the prestigious Golden Bear prize at the Berlin film festival that opened this week, after flopping at the box office in America.
"Soderbergh has made a piece of ambitious, artistic cinema, which is a difficult nut to crack for mass audiences fed on Hollywood pulp," the 82-year-old Lem said in a statement released on his official website on Thursday.
