GRAN CANARIA
The island is circular in shape and you can as we did drive around it in a day, but to explore it to its full you need a week. The south is hot and desert-like with high volcanic peaks in the centre, while the north has pine forests and fertile plantations. It was amazing how you can drive from baron to plush green fields in such a little time.
We stayed at Puerto Rico at 'The Altamar' our hotel was based at the top looking down on the bay of Puerto Rico. The accommodation was basic - two bedrooms and a kitchen diner, spacious and clean. The entertainment in the hotel at night consisted of a disco and occasionally a show was put on probably during our two week stay we saw eight acts. The best being the Hypnotist, this was an amazing show and the audience members who took part said they knew absolutely nothing about what had gone on. Very funny indeed. The food was buffet style and once a week there was a barbecue on the terrace. No complaints about the accommodation or the food but the creepy crawlies are something else!
Puerto Rico
This offers most things that you would want from a summer holiday. A good beach, a fantastic waterpark and boat trips. Beware of the Time-Share Reps, they can become a real nuisance, do not be afraid to be rude to them, sometimes this is the only way to get away. We often took a boat trip to the Port of Magan, known locally as little Venice. We really enjoyed this small resort, free of timeshare reps and very pleasant for sunbathing and swimming. We found some real nice cafe/bars to eat lunch at reasonable prices. The town definitely came alive at night, although we did not venture out much, preferring the comfort of the hotel.
Maspalomas
This is very much for beach lovers. Although the times that we visited it was a little rough in the sea, it was great for watersports - especially if you like being thrown off the banana boats. They say it all adds to the fun! We spent a little time on the beach, did the expected banana ride but moved on to the camels. This was a trip worth doing, a little bumpy perhaps but unforgettable. The sand dunes are incredible and stretch for quite a distance, you can almost think you are in the Sahara.
Playa Del Ingles
This is definitely the busiest of the resorts. It is the resort to visit if you want the nightlife. The sea breezes got up in the afternoon so it would make it ideal for windsurfers. A little noisy for us, but worth a visit.
Aquapark (Puerto Rico)
We visited this quite a few times during our stay. It was ideal for us, there were many slides and once inside we didn't want for anything else. Pizza was the choice for our family, they can make many different pizzas and at very reasonable prices. There was an adult side and a little one's side, so the children were not in danger of being pushed over. It was very safe with plenty of lifeguards about blowing their whistles at people who hung around the bottom of the slides. This was a good day out.
