Kuala Lumpur
Selamat Datang
(Welcome to Malaysia)
Hi, Welcome to Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia has an interesting blend of old and new. The cultural mix is evident by a thriving Chinatown, an Indian quarter, Malay women in headscarves doing their shopping in both of these, and young boys practicing cricket on the downtown playing field.
Discovering KL (as locals affectionately call it) is like travelling through a time tunnel. You will see ultra-modern skyscrapers standing magnificently next to rows and rows of quaint old shop houses. Haute cuisine beside hawker stalls. Somehow it all makes sense ha ha!
The site where the Malaysian flag was first raised in 1957. Aptly, today it's where the tallest flagpole in the world stands.
|
Kuala Lumpur's oldest mosque sits right at the point where two rivers, the Kelang and Gombak rivers, meet - the birthplace of Kuala Lumpur.
|
Kuala Lumpur's original Chinatown, where shopping is a whole new experience. The unmistakable Oriental atmosphere is evident particularly at night when petty traders spread out their wares along the street. It's the ideal place to test your bargaining skills. A must for any tourist.

View from in front of The Petronas Towers |
The Petronas Towers are some of the highest
buildings in the world. They are 452 metres tall. The two towers are connected
by a sky bridge. When you want to visit the towers, the sky bridge is the
highest point you can get, and the views are amazing, but remember your visit is
timed and not too long.
If you are going to visit the towers, I would advise you to collect your free
tickets before ten o'clock. Otherwise it will become late afternoon before you
go up the tower. If you collect your free ticket early in the morning, the
ticket will show you the exact time, when you should be at the elevator/lift to
go up. If you leave it too late then there is a grim chance you will not get the
chance to go up that day and will have to return.
You can collect your free tickets at the ground floor. The elevator/lift, which
brings you to the sky bridge, is located in the basement of the building. The
elevator/lift goes very fast and you should take your pictures fast, because
you're not allowed to stay very long long on the bridge. After 5 or 10 minutes
you're asked to go down.
It's certainly worth a visit. You shouldn't miss it. You can see the Petronas
Towers almost everywhere in the city.
At the foot of the Petronas Towers is the trendy shopping mall "Suria KLCC". The
shopping mall has very expensive shops like: Armani, Chopard, Hermes, Gucci. Go
with a credit card like I did ha ha ha! There is also a restaurant which we
visited a few times and it over looks the amazing fountain display, and the food
isn't bad either.
Inside these Petronas Towers, there is also a cinema, concert hall, conference
hall and a prayer room for the Muslim.
The building was designed by Cesar Pelli and has by its rounding some Islamic
influences.
There are 88 floors and for building the Towers they used a lot of steel and
glass, as you will see from the photo's we took. This skyscraper has 32,000
windows and is mostly used as a office building.
The film `Entrapment' starring Sean Connery and
Catherine Zeta-Jones shows the Petrona Towers at their best.
One thing is clear: The Petronas Towers are the most beautiful building we had
ever seen and at night they are totally amazing.
Bird Park
|
The Bird Park is part of the Lake Garden, which
also includes the Butterfly Park, Deer Park and Orchid Garden. The Bird Park,
enclosed by a vast overhead net roof, is best visited in the early morning, when
birds are most active in the walk-in aviary.
One of the largest bird parks in the region, the Bird Park houses over 5,000
birds from about 160 species from throughout South-East Asia. The main
attractions are the rhinoceros hornbills, the 'talking' tiong, African macaws
and the flamingos. We were unsure if we would enjoy this, but I have to say we
spent a few hours here and really had a wonderful time. To see the birds flying
freely is really lovely to see and the Peacocks always put on a good show.

Batu Caves
Long tailed-macaque monkeys: |
The Batu Caves are situated thirteen kilometres
(seven miles) north of the capital city Kuala Lumpur. They are the sacred place
for the Hindu's in Malaysia. They consist of three main caves and a number of
smaller ones. The caves are made of limestone and 400 meters long and 100 metres
high. They were discovered in 1892. At your arrival you will be greeted by lots
of monkeys. They are going for your peanuts and banana's, which you can buy in
several shop, before you climb up to the caves. You have to climb 272 steps,
which will lead you to the religious and magnificent Batu Caves, and I would
advise you to take a break at each platform, as on a hot day this really is a
hard climb!! We Know!! ha ha ha
Crocodile Farm
It is estimated that the 20-acre farm has more than 1,000 crocodiles, including
several rare ones, as well as some alligators. Here, one can witness and
photograph crocodiles and alligators play and feed in a controlled environment
that closely resembles their natural habitat.
The Langkawi Crocodile Farm, registered with the Convention on International
Trade and Endangered Species (CITES), has conveniently divided its ponds so as
to satisfy a whole range of common fascinations of these reptiles. Among them
are Periodical Pond, Breeding Pond, Bridge Pond, Feeding Pond, Jumping Pond and
Show Pond.
Also, there is also an exhibition centre where one can view the life cycle of a
crocodile as well as photographs of every conceivable aspect of the species.
Look out for 28-year-old Bujang Kawi, the oldest inmate born without teeth. Its length is about four metre while its weight is more than 454 kg. |
There is a display where a couple members of staff perform with the crocodiles, we have to say we were not amused. |
