Majorca

We hired a car when we visited Majorca. This is the only way you will truly explore this island. The roads are very good for travelling on and are well signposted for all major tourist spots. We have been twice and can say we have seen most places and have some very good memories. This place is well suited to families. We stayed at Calas De Majorca. It is on the East Coast and it is for the people who want a reasonable quiet holiday. It is a modern self-contained resort but beware of the undercurrents on the beach, we were not warned by the reps but had found out about it through a programme screened on television before we went.

Palma

Famous for its cathedral and harbour. We visited once, because taking a car in to Palma was not a decision we took easily. Palma is the place for quality shopping, and the main street houses many well known stores, designer shops and of course McDonalds. From Palma you can take the train to Soller. This is definately a trip which must not be missed. It stops at certain points for the photos. When you arrive in Soller you can then board a tram which will take you down to The Port of Soller, it travels through the lemon and orange groves. The smells will never leave you, and the scenery is magnificent.

Port of Soller

Port of Soller offers tranquility, beaches and small shops. We enjoyed our visit to Soller and the port and from here, we went on to Sa Calobra.

Sa Colabra

......

This road is unbelievable. It is known locally and the snake road due to its impressive bends. You feel very good when you reach the end at Puig Mayor. Again, the views are brilliant. After crossing the mountainous wall through a long tunnel, the descent begins. From the beach, a path and a little tunnel pierced in the rock leads you to the Pareis Torrent. It is a gorge with interesting sites. This is defiantly a place to visit to draw or paint the fantastic scenery.

Formentor

The bay at Formentor is in itself a great attraction of Majorca. Tranquility reigns the day. The beach is clean and sandy. You are watched over by mountains and pine forests and it is totally unspoiled. We continued along the road to Cabo Formentor and the lighthouse on the northeastern tip of Majorca.

Puerto Pollensa

This is a very pretty resort, the cafes and bars are ideal for soaking up the wonderful atmosphere whilst enjoying a cool drink and having a fish lunch. Near here, we were told that you could sail, windsurf and water-ski. Pollensa is full of cobbled street and this is a must for tourists, you can get some incredible camera shots for your album.

Porto Cristo

This offers two impressive caves, The Caves of Drach and the Caves at Ham. The first one being the most impressive but the second is well worth visiting. Be prepared to queue during the summer, the town if full of coaches. We do not recommend the local buses, they get very crowded with locals and due to the heat sometimes the main door remains open - not a good idea when you are standing very near to the doors.
