Subject: [WHFB] Tournament Battle Report (part 1)(long)
These battle reports are not part of the Warhammer netcampaign and are for
your enjoyment only.
Velsquee stood across the battle field. He was fresh and feeling a little
frisky. He was ready for another battle. It had been some time since he
had taken Velsquee's Vermintide into battle. The gods of chaos were once
again calling for those who would prove themselves in combat. Velsquee had
gotten the message from Dr. Scarbare, once again he would champion the
Doctors cause as the new chosen one. The Doctor even sent some of his
finest Rat Ogres to travel with me. It would be a glorious day, or so I
thought. One thing is for sure, it would be a long day.
----------------------------------
This was a 2000 pt tournament with the following limitations:
50 pt magic items
no special characters
no allies
DoW mercs allowed
no Book of Secrets
100 pt victory system. (add up all points then divide by 100 for points.
Subtract your opponents points and that is what you get. So a 20 to 5
victory gives you +15 pts, and your opponent would get -15 pts.)
Total Power counts as 3 power cards.
3 round tourny, 1st round random. 2nd and third was pitted by placement.

-------------------------------------
There were a total of 7 players there. Only 6 showed up initially and we
started, but one would have to leave after the first round. The 7th filled
in for the one leaving and brought a different army. The different armies
there were:
Another Skaven Army
Undead (controlled by Tony/Alozar on the list)
Dwarfs (the one who left)
Orcs and Gobbos (the one who filled in)
Chaos Tzeentch warriors (Controlled by Dave T./ also on the list)
Chaos Slaanesh warriors (Controlled by my Son Andrew. His first Tourny)
First round was random: The 2 chaos players faced each other, the undead
and other Skaven army faced each other, I faced the Dwarves.
-------------------------------------------
The stubborn dwarfs were standing across the battle field all arranged in a
line. My gutterrunners had reported back with a report and dissappeared.
They had said not to worry about the gyrocopter as they would take care of
it. I wondered though. The rough note listed a large warrior group with 2
standards, 4 small units of slayers, the general and a rune priest. A group
of crossbowmen, one of hand gunners, an organ gun and the gyrocopter. I
aligned up my army as I would for the entire day. Myself with Telkter and
Steekter in my Clanrat unt. Juhel and his monks to my Right flank, with his
Censor bearers past him. My Rat Ogres on my left flank with the swarms on
their flank. The two slave units as missile screens to myself and the Rat
Ogres. I put the Monks behind a hill.
(This was very effective all day long.)
The dwarfs crossbowmen were taking range finding shots for the better part
of the hour, it was time to move. I took the initiative and we surged
forward. The Slaves moving ahead of us. The Gutterrunners jumped out of
some trees to the far left where the Gyrocoptor was hanging around and threw
their stars. While 3 fell short, 2 hit on target. One on the crew and the
other on the coptor. You could see the star pucture some hose on the coptor
and steam was escaping the pilot seemed ok.
The Dwars responded with a hail of Crossbow fire that dropped a couple
of slaves and the handgunners failed to wound a monk. The Volley gun fired
three of its barrels. The first shot landed long and killed a monk on the
last rank of the unit. The 2nd shot fell short, right in front of Juhel.
He covered his eyes as the dirt flew up right in front of him, waiting for
the impact that wouldn't come. When the dust cleared the cannon ball was
still in the ground in front of him. The 3rd shot never left the barrel as
it jammed and exploded. The following was not pretty as the whole machine
burst into a million pieces of hot red metal that tore the hapless crew to
shreds. Velsquee mused at the thought that his Warpfire thrower had
outlived the Organ gun. The Gyro coptor manuevered around the
gutterrunners and let loose with its steam cannon. Steam shot out, but the
pierced hose must have been worse than I thought as the steam had lost most
of its punch and not a single gutterrunner was even hurt.
The Vermintide continued to move up to within charge range. All things
were looking up. The Gutterrunners moved up to the gyrocopter and threw.
Three hit the pilot and the gyrocopter spun out of control and crashed just
off the side of the battlefield. Steekter lifted his StormDeamon and one
Slayer unit vanished. Juhel powered his Bands and most everything else was
dispelled.
The Dwarfs stood their ground and followed with a barrage of missile
fire. More of the slaves were killed in front of the Rat Ogres but they
held. The handgunners fired and killed a couple of Monks. Finally the
Stunty general throws his axe, with master rune of flight and kills one of
the crew of the warpfire thrower, before it even got a shot off. For the
second straight time the winds of magic blew extremely low. The Dwarf
runepriest must be doing something to keep the winds down. (I used up all my
power on my turn, figuring to pick up power cards on his turn. He rolled a 3
for his first two turns and I only got one card. Both times it was a
dispel.)
My slaves charge into the Slayers, My Monks charge another unit of
Slayers, the Censor Bearers charge into the handgunners and everyone else
moves up. The Priest decimates his slayers and the censor bearers slaughter
the gunners. The slaves even kill a Slayer and only take a couple of wounds
in return. They thought about running but I ordered them to stand in there
and they did. The magic was again mostly dispelled, he did everything he
could to stop my Skeeterleap. I did get the Storm Deamon off again and
killed another slayer unit.
The stunty general charged into the slaves in combat with the slayers
and killed several. The slaves ran and the Slayers pursued and ran into my
Clanrats. The general tried to control himself but failed and chased as
well. The Crossbowmen fired again and killed all but two of the slaves in
front of the rat Ogres who finally fled. But it opened up the Rat Ogres and
swarms for a charge.
Which they do. The Monks and Censor Bearers are too far out and move
around but the battle is almost over. The same with the gutterrunners.
Meanwhile, an assassin jumps out and hacks at the Dwarf General but only
does one wound. The slayers and head stunty kill a couple of clanrats,
while kill off all 4 slayers. The Stunty is so outnumbered he panics and
turns to run, but his short legs are too small and he trips in front of me.
My flail swung up and down onto his head before he could even scream. The
Crossbowmen facing the RatOgres, rat swarms and their general dieing,
quickly fled the battlefield. The runepriest fled as well. I ordered a
barrage of magic onto the last remaining Dwarven unit and Steekter replied.
The Storm Deamon shot down several of the dwarfs, while a plague rampaged
through them killing another 4 or 5.
The runepriest rallied, and the final stunty unit charged. They killed
a handful of clanrats, while I killed several along with Telkter and
Steekter. The battle was a slight victory for us, but the dwarfs held. The
runepriest called for a truce and the dwarfs left the field of battle. They
had fought in a brave manner and I allowed the survivors to leave.
I took a quick report of my army and except for the slaves, I had taken
only light casualties. It had been a good battle as I had never faced
Dwarfs before and wasn't sure what to expect. I gathered up my army and
marched on to the next field of battle. Who would I face. My opponents
would be one of the chaos warriors, the undead or possibly the other Skaven
force. It was a good day to be alive.
---------------------------------------
This ended my first battle and though I won big, it was not an overwhelming
victory. Final score for me was 14 to 1, so I was up by +13. Tony and his
undead won big time and he was at +19. While my son Andrew won his first
game and was up +7. I was very pleased with the results. I didn't want to
have to play Andrew as I play him alot and wanted to play some different
opponents. I was matched with Tony in the second round and while I played
against him in a huge 3v3 6,000 point battle, he had played Lizzies in that
game, I had never faced him one on one. He had beaten the other Skaven
player 21 to 2 in the first game, so I knew he could handle a swarm army,
and the other guy had more Skaven on the board than I did. I was a little
concerned.
The second round also pitted Andrew's Slaanesh Chaos army against the other
Skaven horde. The Dwarf player bowed out at this point and the Orcs and
goblins stepped in and played Dave's Tzeentch warriors.
Part II of this 3 part minisiries will be coming soon...
