Subject: [WHFB] Tournament Battle Report, part 2 of 3. (long)

This is not part of the Warhammer Net campaign and is only for your
enjoyment.

Velsquee had been overcome with the hunger from the previous battle with the
Dwarfs. He had feasted long and hard on the remains of the Dwarfen troll
slayers and on their stunty king. He had been quiet tasty, if not a little
tough. The chaos gods had healed up those who had been injured and he
marched his army to the next field of battle. The undead horde was there
already waiting for them. They had just finished fighting Skaven in the
previous battle and had won a huge victory. The Lich could be seen smacking
his lips as he raised a few of the dead Skaven to refill his ranks.
Velsquee was hoping to let the undead hordes move closer before launching
his assault, but he couldn't chance them just sitting back and raising more
skellies. The gutterrunners came back with their report and headed to some
trees right in the middle of the battle field. From there they could
harrass a large number of troops.
Velsquee deployed in the same manner as before, but due to the lack of
missile troops on the opponents side, he placed his screening troops on the
far flank of the swarms for harrasment purposes. The undead deployed
everything
to my front and left flank. He left almost nothing facing the monks and
censors. His obvious plan worked some what, as the monks and Plague priest
didn't see a single round of combat, but his troops were so smashed together
he couldn't manuever.

----------------------------------------
Velsquee troops surged forward. The Slaves on the far left moving to within
sight of the chariot, but out of charge range. The Gutterrunners didn't
care for the Wraith, and routed. Velsquee didn't care as all he saw was
red
with the skavenbrew he drank and frenzy had overcome him and his clanrats.
The apprentice of Steekter tried to cast Vermintide but was locked into a
mental dual with the lich, and he stood no chance. The Lich easily overcame
him and the warlock dropped to the ground with blood running out of his
ears. Steekter didn't care for this and fired off his Storm Deamon, only to
have it dispelled. Then when he raised his hands and produced a plague upon
the unholy undead the necromancer drained the magic from the air. It cost
him dearly as he lost a level and forgot his summon undead spell. (the level
2 one)
The skellies all moved up and the carrion flew high. Things were
starting to get congested in the middle of the battlefield. The calvary
charged a slave unit that took a command from Velsquee and fled, leaving the
calvary in a bad position. The winds blew strong, but dispels were not to be
had. And with losing one engineer and a dispel scroll already, Velsquee
knew he was in trouble. He knew the Lich would be holding Vanhal's dance
and wanted to destroy it, but when he cast Curse of Years on Velsquee's
unit, he screamed at Steekter, get rid of that thing. Steekter pulled out
his scroll and with all his might, ripped the spell from the Lich's mind,
who screamed with hatred from across the battlefield. He would be avenged.
He pulled out a bottle and drank from it. With it's power he was going to
cast Undead horde. With the potion he could possibly cast it many times,
but I didn't have to let him cast it here. The other Engineer used his
dispel scroll and again the Lich screamed in bewilderment as the power of
his potion was exhausted. The lich still wanted revenge on the Warlock for
his destoying his favorite spell and in a moment of rashness he Vanhal's his
Calvary into the Clanrats and into the Warpfire thrower team. With no
dispels left, Steekter couldn't stop it.
The gutterrunners fail to rally, but the slaves rally. The Rat Ogres
charge into the flank of the skellie calvary and the 2 assassins jumped up
and took the place of the warp fire thrower team. One assassin attacked the
Tomb King but failed to wound him. The globadiers lobbed into the mess and
killed 3 of the undead horsemen. The rat Ogres had a field day and killed
the rest, leaving only the Tomb king, he killed the 2 assassins, but fled
the fight on his nighmarish mount easily outdistancing both the clanrats and
Rat Ogres. The slaves on the far left, not wanting to get charged by the
chariot, moved behind the woods there. The magic phase was uneventful as
the lich squashed all attempts to cast anything.
The carrion streaked out of the sky at the lone engineer, while the
chariot started to charge the slaves and then wondered in bewilderment as to
where they went. The tomb king still didn't feel safe and fled to the edge
of the battlefield. The carrion seemed awestruck as the lone Engineer dived
out of the way of the carrion as they flew by, missing with every attack,
but the horned one was with this Warlock as he thrust his sword up and cut
into the unholy beast. The carrion screached as it fell to the ground and
the others gave way, right in front of the Plague monks. (I did one wound,
he suffered a second. He didn't rout, but he lost so he fell back. We
weren't sure on if carrion should do this or not, so we rolled a d6 and Tony
lost. I think every die roll went against Tony in this battle.) Again the
winds blew strong. He tried to cast summon horde, and Steekter reached
into the mind of the lich again, it was easier the second time and not only
dispelled the horde, but removed it from his mind. The Lich screamed in
bewilderment. This could not be. Both the Lich and the Necromancer were
down to only one spell each. The Lich cast dance on both the skellie units
and charged them into the Rat Ogres.
The Slaves moved back from behind the trees in hopes of distracting the
chariot again. The Rat swarms charged into a zombie unit. The Censor
bearers charged into a zombie unit. The Monks charged at the carrion but
they fled. I've never seen so many undead rout in my life. The globadiers
moved into the woods and lob into the rear ranks of the Lich's skellie unit
but only kill 2. The Warp fire thrower turns and shoots at the zombies
with the swarms and the chariot. Excellent shot and warp fire burns one of
the zombies and lands smack on top of the chariot, killing one of the
steeds, both crew and burns the chariot body to nothing. The swarms only
kill one
zombie and do a wound on the swarm as well. The censor bearers slaughter
the zombies they were fighting. Finally, the skellies proved useless
against
the Rat Ogres and only the Lich was able to land a blow, wounding a Rat Ogre
lightly. The Rat Ogres did well and killed many of the Skellies, but they
were just too outnumbered. They only lost by a couple but routed anyway and
only ran 6. But the Necro and his skellies only chased 5. The Magic phase
went better as I got the Storm Deamon off and killed more skellies. Finally
I got plague off and killed the wraith with it, but only killed one more
skeleton. The Slaves rallied as well.
The Necromancer charged into the clanrats and took several globes and
throw axes, and most of his skeletons fell. The Necro managed to wound
Steekter, but we killed everything in the unit, and the Lich was all that
remained in front of us. The Swarms killed the zombies and were in good
spot for the flank charge on the Lich and his skellies, the carrion failed
to rally, but the tomb king did.
Velsquee and his clanrats charge in. The Lich and Velsquee circle each
other. No one else dare get in the way of these two generals. The slaves
tried to charge the chariot, or the steed that was left, but it was just too
scary, so the warp fire team shoots at it again. Another beautiful shot,
but it fails to kill the misarable bony steed. The Rat Ogres decided they ha
d had enough and continued to run. Velsquee jumps in with his
flail and lands three good blows. The Lichs amulet which matched Velsquee's
gleamed and one of the wounds was reflected and Velsquee felt the burning as
his own amulet proved fruitless. The Lich then attacked back with his own
flail, landing two good blows, luckily this time Velsquee's amulet worked
and rebounded both wounds. The Lich was surprised when his own amulet
failed to work and a look of horror overcame his face before he turned to
dust along with the rest of his army. Only the Tomb King was left standing
from the undead side, and he surrendered.
Velsquee sighed in relief. It was a tough battle but luck had
definetely been on his side. He gathered his forces and moved on to the
next battle.
---------------------------------------------
Thus ended the second round. I had beaten Tony and his undead horde. The
final score was 24 to 3. He had gotten 2 points from my Rat Ogres who
rolled an 11 on the final turn to rally, when a 10 would have rallied them.
And one from the Warlock he killed on the first turn. Wow did he roll bad
and me lucky. Usually it's I who get the unlucky rolls, but not this time.
In 8 attacks it was not uncommon to get 6 or 7 hits and 5 wounds. Thats
what I did with the Swarms and Rat Ogres in their combats. Losing all his
spells really hurt and the chariot was just in a bad spot from the very
beginning. He also made a mistake, I felt, charging in with the calvary on
the first turn, with no support at all. But he wanted to kill the Warpfire
team. But all it really did this game was kill the chariot.
Anyway, that gave me an additional +21 points.
The other games went like this:
Andrew and his chaos lost to the Skaven by 7 points and the Orc and Gobbo
player beat Dave and his chaos, by a whapping 28 to 8. So the standings
after the second round were:
Me (Skaven); +34 2-0
Orcs & Gobbos: +7 1-1
Andrew (Chaos Slaanesh): 0 1-1
Tony (Undead): -2 1-1
Skaven: -12 1-1
Dave (Chaos Tzeentch): -27 0-2

the O&G player may have proven himself to be better than expected and wanted
to play me in the final round to have a shot at 1st. So the pairings for
the next round were:
My skaven vs O&G.
Andrew Chaos vs Tony's Undead
Skaven vs Dave's Chaos.

The final chapter will be written in the exciting conclusion...
