Subject: [WHFB] Cancon - Story of a Daemon Hunter ~ Part 2 (Long)
Well, the second day of the con arrived, all bleary eyed and fatigued from
the games the day before, and staying up to 2am crunching numbers with
Richard, as I had been roped into helping him organise the tournament....
(and for all those curious types out there - all I did was read out names,
make a few funny comments about the Defender of the Universe (in joke), and
cross things of a list....
Anyway, Game 1 for Day 2, (also known as round 4), saw me against Andrew
Hunt, a damn funny guy, who had a great personality, and was one of the best
games, (in terms of sheer enjoyment), that I have ever played. He was
running an Empire army, and wanted the game called off on the grounds of
Psychological warfare after I started eating my breakfast of Coco-Pops with
Pepsi max instead of Milk.... hey, I was hungry! Anyway, this game devolved
into a lot of laughs, and one massive combat where my general took on the
majority of his army in a huge, bloody battle in the centre of the table.
Meanwhile, my mages were picking of his smaller and more vunerable units,
whilst my Marauders hid from the Crossbows, My warriors moved forward to try
and engage something, and my Marauder Cav died against his Halberdiers, but
not before assassinating his mages and Battle Standard Bearer. My warriors
actually took the charge of his hero on Chimera and broke it, but failed to
run it down. However, just as it rallied, my level 3 sorceror killed his
hero with the Lash of Slaanesh, the beast, finally freed from it's master,
taking flight and leaving the battle. At the end of the day, he had his
warwagon (sans warhorses), Steam Tank, and general left, he had taken my
Marauder Cav. But it still left me with a 7-3 victory, and some great
memories of a fun game.
The second game would take something special to overshadow the game against
Andrew Hunt. This would be against another Andrew, (Andrew Bigwood), and
his Nurgle Daemons. This army was superbly painted, and featured both a
Great Unclean One and a Daemon Prince. My first chance against a Greater
Daemon, and I was looking forward to the clash of the generals. A great
game, against somebody who plays only for the sheer enjoyment of the game,
and doesn't care if he wins or loses if he has fun. The game was probably
lost on the Eye of God card. Feeling confident, I played it on my level 3
sorceror, who promptly turned to spawn. It is only now, in hindsight, that
I realised the reason for Slaanesh's displeasure. The model is in fact the
top half of Dieter Helensinct, Doom Lord of Middenheim, and not truly
Slaaneshi..... Anyway, with my mage spawned, I was in what I believed to be
trouble, so for only the second time did I black gem anything - his Daemon
Prince. Lord Skeksik charged his GUO, and in the first round inflicted a
total of 5 wounds, the Daemon couldn't attack back due to the Allure, and
lost combat by 6. This was where the game would be won, if at all. He
broke. I was looking good as he rolled a 9 for his flee, but as my first
dice rolled a 6, the other two came up as a 1 and 2..... ARRRGGHHHH!! 9" for
my pursuit, and the Daemon escaped me this turn. He rallied, I charged, but
only managed 4 wounds, and he made his break test after being able to hit,
and destroying the chariot, leaving just the general and the marauder left.
The game was then all over, when my general was charged by Plague Bearers
who managed to hit and wound my general who promptly turned to a small pile
of goo. The black gem wore off in it's first turn again, my level 1 mage
dying horribly at the hands of the annoyed Daemon Prince. The only shinning
light, (other then getting the GUO down to 1 wound in 2 rounds of combat),
were my Marauder infantry, who when all was lost, and I was looking down the
barrel of a 3-7 loss, managed to charge his unit of 6 plagueriders. I only
had 6 marauders left at this stage. All 8 attacks were put on the Beasts,
with all 8 hitting, and 6 wounding, killing 2 of the models. The champion
in the unit only managed to fell 1 marauder, the Beast failing that. The
Plague riders broke, and were run down. Thus, with some pride restored, I
salvaged a 4-6 loss, but it was a great, fun game, and never again, will my
level 3 sorceror be given Eye of God..... taking 3 damn good spells, his
fighting ability and warpstone charm with him.
4 and 1 after 5, and I was really enjoying the weekend after earlier having
a minor mental breakdown after putting too much pressure on myself to get my
army painted in time. Hmmmmm! Next time, I will have to give myself more
time.... (now where have I heard that one before?). The next game, and last
one for day 2, would be against a certain player that I had always admired
and wanted to play, but never had the chance. Paul vanDerwerk, and his
Slaaneshi Daemon army. This guy is one of the true gems of the hobby. An
absolute delight to play, or even to talk to about the game. He is good fun
and spirit personified. His army had 2 characters, a Keeper of Secrets, and
an unaligned Daemon Prince who had a unit of flamers as his retinue. This
game went to plan, and I finally managed to get a Greater Daemon, (albeit
one of my own god), nailed onto the wall. We were both joking throughout
this game that the reason I was kicking his butt, was because Slaanesh was
displeased at his fraternisation with Tzeentch Daemons. I think it must
have been true, for in what would be his last turn, he failed to dispel
Malediction of Nagash on his Greater Daemon, (needing anything but a 1),
when my chariot and general was 1" away from him and to the rear.... (now
how Slaaneshi is that?) :-)
His Daemon Prince managed to escape 2 rounds in a row, preventing me an 8-2,
but a 7-3 was great, and moreso, because it was a fantastic game against a
fantastic player. Even a 2-8 loss would have been worth it against that
kind of opponent.
At the end of the 2nd day, I was 5-1, with 3 absoloutely great games under
my belt that day. I had 37 points after the two days, and was close to the
top of the tournament, could anything be better? Yes it could, roast pork
and crackling that night, and my breakfast tomorrow.... :-)
