Testing the defesnes, more lessons learned

A possible tactic for 'testing the defenses':
Keep a small unit behind the gate. After your opponent has been battering the gate, turn after turn, if your 1 turn away from the end, open the gates and CHARGE him. [try to position the charge to avoid any champions, heroes, or the general]. A good choice here for my fellow undead players is a unit of Skellies[no options]. It is better to forgo the rank bonus, and charge with a unit 2 or 3 models wide, then to end up BSB with the general. At the very least, with the gates open, you will avoid 1 round of combat battering down your poor gates. With luck, you can manage to hang in there for not only your combat phase, but your opponents upcoming combat phase.
Don't do this early in the game, otherwise your opponent can stream through the gates and then take on your troops. [Remember - he has 2 victory conditions, destroy the gates or destroy all troops]. But if it saves you from only ONE round of beating on the gates, its can be worth 40-60 points in troops. [The scenario I won was won on the last round, 50/50 chance, by gate destruction.]
