Recommended tools and materials:

There are a few simple tools and materials needed for scenery building and miniature painting. Some are optional, and some are a must have. They range from the simple, to the complex (and possibly expensive). However, most tools will be easy to come by, and you may even have some of them lying around the house.

Paint Brushes

Paint brushes:

You will definitely need several quality paint brushes (left). You cannot achieve good results with poor / cheap paint brushes. Buy stable (made of animal hair) paint brushes. You can purchase your brushes at craft stores, hobby stores, and art supply stores.

Don't use your new brushes for drybrushing. Instead, use your old, tattered brushes (far left). They are perfect for drybrushing, so don't throw them away.

Files

Files:

Files are used to prepare miniatures, by removing flash or mold lines from miniatures. All you need is one file, a small half-round one. (Half-round files have one side flat, and the other curved.) Hobby and hardware stores should carry small files.

Two-part (5 minute) epoxy:

Two-part epoxy putty is a type of glue. It comes in two tubes. When you mix equal amounts from each tube, the epoxy begins to set (or harden). The glue sets in 5 minutes, and forms a very strong bond. Uses include gluing lead pieces together, as well as attaching plastic arms and such to lead.

You can obtain two-part epoxy at most hardware stores.

Two-part epoxy putty Two-part epoxy putty:

Different from the two-part epoxy above, two-part epoxy putty is yet another type of glue. It comes in the form of two sticks of putty (like clay). When you mix equal amounts of putty from each stick, it begins to get sticky and harden. While this is happening, it can be used to glue pieces together, such as attaching a miniature to it's plastic base. It can also be used as a filler (to fill gaps between two pieces), and can even be used to sculpt new detail onto a miniature.

You can obtain two-part epoxy putty at most hardware stores.

Pin Vise

Pin vise / micro drill bits:

Pin vises are designed to hold small drill bits. They are used to drill small holes into objects. Uses include drilling holes into parts in order to pin them together. You can also use them to drill holes into the barrels of weapons to achieve more realistic looking guns.

Pin vises and micro drill bits can be obtained from a good hobby store, and some hardware stores.
