Any basic book on heraldry can give you ideas to paint onto your knights. For basic
knights and retainers, I try to stick to basic patterns like crosses, chevrons, and, and
bends.
Retainers are painted in the same manner as knights.
Peasants will be painted in more browns. Paint the various pieces of clothing different
shades of brown, then wash the entire figure with Raw Umber.
Wood can be painted with a Raw Sienna basecoat followed by a Raw Umber wash.
As a side note, Wargames Foundry, produces a very nice line of peasants while
Thunderbolt Mountain produces a line of weapons and lances that scale to warhammer figures
nicely.
