STUDENT GUIDELINES

Welcome to San Francisco, and welcome to the experience of living with an American Host. San Francisco is multi-cultural city that provides an opportunity to meet people of diverse backgrounds and interests. You will notice many differences from your own culture's way of living and relating to other people. Experiencing another way of life is one of the advantages of living in homestay accommodations. Do talk with your host about how you can best fit into their household routine. Most of all enjoy it while you are here. Following are some general guidelines to help you in establishing a good relationship with your host.

1. Your host will provide a room for you along with breakfast and dinner each day. Please purchase your lunches outside the home or arrange to bring food in to prepare packed lunches.

2. Ask your host what time they usually serve dinner so you can arrange your schedule to be on time. If you will not be home for dinner, telephone your host or let them know a day ahead that you will not be there. Also ask them what time you are expected to be home at night and let them know if you will be later so they will not worry about you.

3. You are responsible for payment of any telephone charges that you incur on your hosts' telephone, so be sure to have them assist you in making long distance calls. Calls to your home country can be made collect.

4. You may be asked to assist with your host's household chores such as helping to wash the dishes. Be sure to keep your own possessions in an orderly way and clean up after yourself.

5. The San Francisco area has been experiencing a severe shortage of rainfall for several years. Residents of this area are asked to use the smallest amounts of water possible. Please cooperate by taking brief showers and limiting your water usage whenever possible.

6. Many Americans enjoy having pets such as dogs and cats inside their home. When possible, we will place students who request it in a home without pets, but it is not always possible. You can close your bedroom door and request that the pet be kept out of your room.
