The trouble with Light Gauss

Now, I know that Battletech requires a certain suspension of belief in the laws of Physics and such, but I have a little problem with the Light Gauss. Anybody else remember seeing the equation E=1/2MV2? Now, we know that the Light Gauss Cannon fires slugs that are half the mass of the real Gauss Cannon. However, it apparently fires them faster. Which is all well and good. Going by the range increase for a speed increase, we're looking at about a 14% increase in velocity. It's not much, I'll admit - but velocity is what gets squared in the equation. Well, I guess game balance must be maintained somehow…
