You are the dealer. You open your hand and see 11 points, no five card suit, and no-trump distribution. You pass. Your opponent glances at his cards, then passes also. Partner finally ceases with the social chatter, unfolds his cards, then bids one spade. Your right-hand opponent passes. You stare at your cards. Your dilemma?? Did partner open in third seat (see Third and Fourth Seat Opening Bids) because he was straining to open, or because he has a full opening or better hand?
One way to tell if partner is on a full opening is to play Drury. After partner has opened with a major suit in 3rd or 4th seat, a 2C response is asking partner whether his opening bid is a full opening bid (13 or more points), or if he opened "light" in the 3rd or 4th position. Partner will convey the strength or weakness of his opening bid as follows:
2D = to show a less than opening bid
Any other bid will show a full-strength opening.
The bidding will proceed normally after that.
