With Key Card Blackwood, locating the King of trump and/or the Queen of trump can mean the difference in staying out of a slam that can't be made, bidding a small slam easily, or finding the ellusive and coveted Grand Slam. Key Card Blackwood deals with 5 key cards: the four aces and the king of trump. There is also a bid thrown in there to locate the queen of trump.
Using Key Card Blackwood, the 4NT bid is asking partner, "Hey! Got any aces...and by the way, I'd be interested in knowing if you have the king or queen of our trump suit?" Partner's responses will be:
1. 5 clubs. "I have NO key cards (remember, the key cards are all 4 aces and the king of the trump suit) or I have THREE key cards." I know it sounds like you will be guessing what partner is holding, but your guess will be an educated one. You will know from the bidding.
2. 5 diamonds. "I have ONE or FOUR key cards, partner".
3. 5 hearts. "Two. I have two key cards, and I DO NOT have the queen of trump".
4. 5 spades. "Two. I have two key cards, and by the way... I have the queen of trump!".
Partner may then ask for kings by bidding 5NT. The king of trump will not be included in a response to partner's inquiry in that it was included in the key card bid.
