No-trump bids are exactly that. No suit has been named trump, therefore, the highest card played in the suit lead will take the trick. One of the most exact, descriptive bids that can made in bridge is the opening bid One No Trump. This bid says (and means), "Partner, I have exactly 15 to 17 points, no more and no less, and I have NO voids and NO singletons". Here is a perfect example of a no-trump opening bid:
AKxx ~~~ Ax ~~~ Kxx ~~~ Kxx
This hand contains 17 points and has perfect no-trump distribution (no voids or singletons). It is exactly what partner is picturing your hand to be when you open one no trump.
