Yugoslavia |
In Feb. 2003, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was renamed Serbia and Montenegro. The former Yugoslavia, once an often volatile union of six republics, splintered in the 1990s from a brutal ten-year civil war. The renaming reflects the two remaining republics, Serbia and Montenegro.
Serbia and Montenegro together are largely mountainous. The northeast section of Serbia is part of the rich, fertile Danubian Plain drained by the Danube, Tisa, Sava, and Morava River systems. Montenegro is a jumbled mass of mountains, containing also some grassy slopes and fertile river valleys.
