THQ's release of Red Faction on the N-Gage proved that the first-person shooter genre has great potential on the game deck. It showcased some stunning graphics, kept a respectable framerate, and put players smack in the middle of frantic action. There isn't much more you can ask for in an FPS -- especially a handheld one. Nokia is taking that gun and running with it, with the announcement of Ashen being in production. Developer Torus Games is at the helm -- while simultaneously working on another Nokia-published N-Gage title, Operation Shadow. FPS is an area Torus knows very well, having developed both DOOM II and Duke Nukem Advance for GBA. Ashen won't be your typical first-person shooter. The game injects some survival-horror style elements into the mix. It's much easier to blast away at something that looks like it'll rip your head off and lay eggs in your torso, than it is to shoot some simple humanoids that you'd probably go and shoot pool with after work. There are seven wicked species of alien life forms to turn to goo. They're both deadly and devious, and will even crawl up the levels' walls.
You won't be probing anyone again, alien scum! Ashen has nine implements of death. Pistols can be held akimbo for that theatrical flair. But, when you want to do some real heavy damage with extreme prejudice, there are grenade and rocket launchers. Point, shoot, then duck and cover. The game takes place in Seven River City, which has had some bad luck as of late. Not only are natural disasters running rampant, but supernatural phenomena is becoming the norm (see aforementioned wall-crawling beasties). As main character and
resident Jacob Ward, you must deal with Seven River City's worst to combat the chaos. This occurs over eight single-player maps. Like Red Faction, Ashen has deathmatching goodness for up to four players. All single-player maps can be used, but there are also two exclusive maps just for shooting the crap out of your pals. Red Faction's maps were on the tiny side, so it will be nice to see multiplayer opened up. N-Gage needs some system sellers -- especially exclusive games. Who are we kidding; the console needs games period. Few genres show the deck's graphical superiority like first-person shooters. This puts some pressure on Ashen. We hope it will deliver the goods.
