Chihuahua Breed in Brief This is a graceful, alert little dog with a saucy expression and many terrier-like qualities. Its ancestors lived in Central America as early as the ninth century, but the Chihuahua of today has been developed to his current form in the United States. This breed is very hardy and adaptable, but must live indoors. Its size makes it wonderful for people who live in small apartments. There are two types of coat: smooth and long. Both can be of any solid color, or marked or splashed with another color. Chihuahuas are good travelers who can easily go anywhere with their owners. They prefer others of their own kind, and don't like dogs of other breeds. Many Chihuahuas are born with a small opening (called a molera) in the skull, a hereditary trait that usually closes by the time the dog matures. As not all veterinarians are aware of this phenomenon, it would be wise to seek out one who is familiar with the Chihuahua. Height at shoulder: about 5". Weight: up to 6 lbs. AKC group: Toy Dogs. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
