Beagle Breed in Brief This hound was bred, beginning centuries ago in the British Isles, to hunt rabbits by scent, though by the mid-eighteenth century it was most frequently used in fox hunting. Today Beagles come in two varieties: 13-inch, dogs that do not exceed 13 inches in height at the shoulder; and 15-inch, those between 13 and 15 inches tall. The coat is short and easy to care for. It can be tri-colored, which is a combination of black, tan and white markings; or it may be red, which can be any lighter shade of brown, with white markings. Beagles can adjust to any living circumstance, but they need exercise. However, no Beagle should be allowed to roam free, as its nose will surely get it into trouble. Future Beagle owners should be aware that, as part of their hunting heritage, Beagles are known to bark. These easygoing, good-natured dogs make good companions. Height at shoulder: 12-15". Weight: 18-20 lbs. AKC group: Hounds. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
