Bloodhound

Breed in Brief

Many experts believe that the Bloodhound was known throughout the Mediterranean area long before the Christian era.
Its name comes from the phrase "blooded hound," meaning "aristocratic."
This powerful dog has a noble, dignified expression.
Bloodhounds are noted for their strong ability to hunt by scent.
For centuries they have been used for police work and to trail lost or missing people.
The Bloodhound's skin is thin to the touch and extremely loose, especially around the head and the neck, where it hangs in deep folds.
The short coat can be black and tan, red and tan, or tawny.
The darker hairs are sometimes interspersed with lighter hairs, and sometimes flecked with white.
Bloodhounds should never be allowed to roam free without supervision. Extremely affectionate but somewhat shy by nature, they do not make good watchdogs, but interact well with children and make fine family companions.

Height at shoulder: 23-27".
