Chinese Shar-Pei Breed in Brief This alert, active and dignified dog is an ancient breed from China. The name means "sand skin" or "paper-like coat." The Shar-Pei is distinctive in appearance, with small ears and a "hippopotamus" muzzle shape. The skin on the head and body is loose. The loose skin and the wrinkles that cover the head, neck and body are abundant in puppies, but may be limited to the head, neck and withers in the adult. Like the Chow Chow (and no other dog), the Shar-Pei has a blue-black tongue. The short, very harsh coat comes in solid colors, sometimes with darker shading down the back and on the ears. The Chinese Shar-Pei is regal, alert, intelligent and dignified. He may appear independent, snobbish or stand-offish with strangers, but is extremely devoted to his family. Height at shoulder: 18-20". Weight: 40-55 lbs. AKC group: Non-Sporting Dogs. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
