Chow Chow

Chow Chow

Breed in Brief

This ancient Chinese breed was originally used for hunting, herding and the protection of homes.
Today Chow Chows are primarily companion dogs.
A distinctive feature of this dog is his blue-black tongue.
The coat comes in two types, rough and smooth.
The rough-coated Chow has abundant, thick fur that forms a profuse ruff around the head.
The smooth-coated Chow's coat is hard, dense and smooth, with no obvious ruff.
The coat can be one of five colors: red (light golden to deep mahogany), black, blue, cinnamon (light fawn to deep cinnamon) or cream.
It requires regular grooming.
The Chow Chow is not vicious or aggressive, but his possessive nature can be misunderstood.
This dog has limited peripheral vision and needs to be approached within its scope to prevent him from being startled.
He has a keen intelligence, an independent spirit and an innate dignity that can give him an aura of aloofness.
It is a Chow's nature to be discerning with strangers, but his devotion to family is unparalleled.
Chows are wonderful companions for adults who care for them properly.
