Dachshund Breed in Brief Bred in Germany to hunt badgers (dachs, in German) and other small game, these clever, lively, courageous and versatile dogs have distinctive short legs and long bodies. The breed comes in two sizes: standard and miniature, and the coat comes in three varieties: smooth, longhaired and wirehaired. While all Dachshunds require routine brushing to keep their coats healthy and in good condition, the longhaired and wirehaired dogs may need extra grooming from a professional. The coat comes in a range of colors that includes red and black-and-tan. Because of their structure, some Dachshunds may be prone to back problems. Their short legs insure maximum exercise per mile. This loyal breed makes a good companion whether you live in a small apartment or in the country. Outdoors the Dachshund is hardy, vigorous and tireless. Indoors he is affectionate and responsive, and alert in announcing strangers. Height at shoulder: standard, about 10"; miniature, about 6". Weight: standard, 16-32 lbs; miniature, less than 11 lbs. AKC group: Hounds. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
