German Shepherd Dog Breed in Brief Originally developed in Germany as a herding dog, this loyal and courageous breed is known throughout the world for his uncanny intelligence and faithfulness, as well as the ability to be trained for a number of special services. The versatile German Shepherd Dog has a well-earned reputation as family companion, guide dog, police dog and, of course, herder. The coat is medium in length, dense and harsh, and lies close to the body. It comes in many different colors, with strong, rich colors preferred. Fearless yet not hostile, German Shepherd Dogs have self-confidence and an aloofness that does not lend itself to indiscriminate friendships. Great companions, they are excellent house dogs, but need daily exercise. Height at shoulder: 22-26". Weight: 65-90 lbs. AKC group: Herding Dogs. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
