This article was aimed at home rod builders with no previous knowledge of the craft or only limited experience. By carefully following each step described in these linked pages, referring regularly to the fact boxes, charts, photos and glossary of terms, I believe that anybody can build a functional and practical fishing rod. | In the Rod Recipes section at the end of this article, I have included some data sample for novice crafter so that they can follow them without going through the trial & error method. You may prefer to make you own recipes from scratch but I strongly recommend that you record the specifications of the rod under construction for future reference if an error is encountered. Rod building can be simply a way of saving money, or it can progress to the level of a fulltime hobby in it own right - it may even lead to a source of additional income or become a rewarding career. If you have any doubts or questions, please e-mail me and I will be happy to answer any of you unanswered questions.
THE ART OF ROD BUILDING
|
There are few things in life more pleasurable than building your own rod and catching a trophy fish on it. People custom build their own fishing rods for many different reasons. Firstly, building your own allows specialisation and purpose designing. Most factory-rolled rod try to be general purpose tools. Next, home building also allows the angler to choose his or her own components and to mix and match at will. In contrast, DIY craftsman can pick the best, perhaps mixing American blankwith Japanese guides, Australian tip and grips/handle from Korea. | Why build you own rod? Rod building is very definitely a member of that group of skills, and perhaps that's why - in this age of yearning for the simpler pleasures of days gone by - it gives such a warm glow to turn out a special one, one off fishing rod. There are few experiences I our sport that can match the feeling of taking a prize fish on a rod you've design and built for yourself. It's that feeling, we believe, that will bring you back to the workbench again and again and transform you from a rod user into a rod maker.
