TALKER HELP

If you have come to this page, it means you have no idea what a talker is, or you just want to hear me rattle off how I interpret talkers. Hopefully it is the first one!! Welcome to talkers!!

Basically a talker is a place to well..talk. Many people from around the world inhabit these places..and there are many talkers to choose from. After learning the most basic of talker commands, you can go around to the different talkers, and pick which ones suit yourself the best. Just remember everyone was a newbie to talkers at some point or another, so frustration and confusion are pretty much normal.

First of all, you have to have a telnet client, I recommend either Pueblo or Gmud, both of which are free to download. You can go to any search engine, and it can link you to the right places, until I put the downloads on this place for you myself. That will come in the future. Most pc's have a telnet client in their windows package..you can use this until you have gotten a better client.

There are two ways to connect to talkers, through their webpages, if they have one or just telneting to them yourself. Below is an address that you can connect to, just right from this webpage after you have read through the basics, or you can just go back to my talkers page and connect to any one of those you wish.

Okay on to the using the client...you usually have to enter in a host name and a port number. host name is usually something like talker.com or dune.net...the port number is always a 4 digit number like 3200 or 7777 after you have these entered you click on connect and it will take you to the place you desire. You will have to enter in a username, something you want, like Superfox, or Sneaks for example. (You can use whatever you wish for an username..I recommend not using your real name, but this is just my personal opinion.) After this then you have to enter in a password, this can consist of characters, numbers, or a combination of the both like silly14 or bojangles22. It can be whatever you choose, I suggest writing it down so you do not forget it. Then you will be connected to the talkers server..you are almost there!! Sometimes you may have picked an username that has already been used, so you may have to pick another username. Read everything that pops on your screen, most times it is helpful information about the talker, and any rules that there might be. After being connected..entering in your username and password...and agreeing to the rules you will be entered into a room. Woohoo now you can finally make an attempt to talk to other users. Sometimes there will be people whom are friendly and perhaps a Wiz, so they can help you in your setting up an account if you so desire to stay. A wiz is someone whom is dedicated to the talker, and helpful with a knowledge of commands. They are your best bet to talk to when first starting out. To talk to someone you basically just type and press enter...and then the words will magically appear on the screen! the best thing to do is type .h newbie do not forget the period!! Most of the talkers you will go to you have to use a period and them the command you want to use. .h newbie is a basic help file that will get you started. Don't feel intimidated if things go to fast at first, just take your time. After reading the help file you should set up an account if you plan on staying. Most places you have to a set of steps to setting up an account I will give you a few examples.

1. type .desc (message here)
This is what will be displayed after your name, a short description. For example you could type .desc flies a lot It would show Sneaks flies a lot
2. type .entpro (enter)
This will take you to an editor where you can enter in a profile about yourself. You can type just about anything you like, except a link to other talkers or in some cases sexual connotations.
3. type .set email (email address) or .accreq (email)
This is pretty straight forward, just type in your email address where it says email in brackets.
4. type .read rules
Some places have this command and some do not..after you have read the rules, and if you agree type .agree

After doing the setup commands you will now be able to start talking and looking at the other commands. to look at what commands you have type .h or .com . If you want to see a help file on a command you could type .h emote or .h shout .the most basic commands you will be using is the .emote command, the .shout command and the .t (user) command.

An emote command is what you would use to do an action.
For example .emote dances the night away
This would show the users in the room Sneaks dances the night away
To do this privately to one user the command is .pemote user message or .remote user message

A shout or semote command will display what you are saying to every room and every user at the talker.
For example .shout Hi everyone would show Sneaks says Hi everyone to all the users in the talker.
A .semote command is like the .emote command but it is shout emoted to everyone in the talker.

A tell command is what you would privately like to tell one user, this is handy when you don't want anyone else to see what you are saying.
For example .tell Cass Hey you..hope you are doing well today! would show the user Cass that message only.

Well that is the just of what a talker is..I hope you come and try it all out, I know I have a lot of fun on them! They are also a good substitution to www chats, and I find the people more friendly to talk to. This is my personal opinion, not necessarily that of others. I hope this page was informative, and if there is anything that you think is to confusing you can always email me!

You can telnet now to Shades of Blues
Cass
