Title: Powers and Facing Darkness
Written By: Drew Thiele

Adam nearly screamed, "WHAT? A what? Fire...fireball?" Jade cringed at Adam's volume. "BOYD, you could have hurt yourself, or someone else! What were you thinking??"

I shrugged my shoulders, "I wanted to try something. To see if it was true. Or if we've been using only our barest potentials as TP's."

Adam's face contorted from furious, then to resigned, then to thoughtful, but protective. Jade shrugged off Adam's actions, and squealed, "Wow! You conjured a fireball?"

Adam's expression became irritated for a slight second. "Jade!"

Jade giggled, "Sorry." Adam shrugged, but nodded. "So... does this prove that we all can do other abilities, or ... just this was your ability? I mean..you hadn't found yours yet."

I looked at Adam in startlement, at his true assessment. "Yeah...but.. I was just picking this one at random; it didn't feel particularly RIGHT, or like it fit me." Adam still gazed at me with some skeptism apparent on his features.

Ami jumped to my defense, and declared, "Hey..What if we all try to do it, at least one at a time, and one can do a 'slap' sort of thing, to snap us out of it, if we fall prey to the same thing."

Adam crossed his arms in front of him, and mused. "Yeah. That would be okay. You guys up for it?" The rest of the group agreed willingly. I nodded, the memory of the sickness was fading quickly. I felt more energetic to try something else.

Megabyte raised a hand, his expression hesitant, said, "I don't know where to start? I mean... "

Ami pondered thoughtfully. "Yeah, you're right Megabyte. We probably have only started to use our abilities. We basically have used what has popped up at the time, and when we need it." Adam crossed his arms, in deep thought, with a hand cupping his chin. He gestured with his index finger, tapping his chin for a moment, and said, "Hmmm. Ami has a point here. I don't know why we hadn't thought of it before."

Kevin spoke up, "Maybe because we're too busy using the ones we already KNOW how to do, like teleporting, talking, and stuff....getting in trouble." That earned a rueful chuckle from Megabyte and Ami. There was unanimous silence and acceptance of this fact.

"Ok, Who's first?" Kevin piped up, eager to get started.

I smiled at Kevin. "Hm. Maybe we should try getting a list together?" Megabyte picked up a book that had been by us the entire time, lying on a slaterock. He peered at the title. "Developing Psychic Powers" He chuckled. He looked up at me, and said, "Man, this book is pretty good, but if only everyone knew! I don't know why no one else has broken out, if these books are very accessible?"

No one had the answer to the question. Megabyte flipped through the book really quick, stopping at a section. "Wow. This describes your ability, Ami." Ami leaned over Megabyte's shoulder to peek, and read the title, "Clairvoyance", and its description. Ami smiled, "Why don't we start with that one? It's still a bit harrowing for me, when I invoke it, since your senses are somewhat hyperaware when you are going through this thing."

I nodded. It took several hours for each of us to try every major ability listed in that book. We did find that we all possessed a lot of the same psychic abilities that would be called "basic" psychic abilities, but to a greater or lesser degree.

The sun was beginning to set over the horizon of the Ocean's lapping waves. Adam suggested we all adjourn into the Ship for a few more hours. As we nodded in agreement, a loud static burst vanished one by one, to whisk us away into the Ship's Inner Chamber.

A multitude of light bursts emerged. I felt great, since I had unearthed two discoveries... the first, that Kevin and I shared mutual feelings for each other, and that we all had different powers, but also a lot of the same common ones. Ami was the strongest Clairvoyant, where I was the strongest Psychometrist, and Jade could find things easily enough, similiar to a dowser, Megabyte found he could sense electricity running through anything, even people. Kevin's ability, however strong, was a bit unusual. But not news. He could read other people's thoughts, as if they were TP's.

We settled on various ledges, and just enjoyed each other's companionable silences, when Ami's stomach growled. She laughed lightly, "I guess I forgot dinner, in all this excitement!" I smiled softly at Ami. I said, "Would your mom mind if Kevin and I came over for dinner?"

Ami chuckled. "Sure. If Kevin doesn't mind?" Kevin shook his head hurriedly, smiling broadly. He gave me a look that wasn't lost on Adam, and Jade. Jade stared with wide eyes at Kevin. Adam looked bewildered.

Ami grinned, and said, "'Path ya in 2 seconds!"

Ami vanished in a static burst of noise. Ami reappeared in the living room of her home, and shouted, "MOM!?" She looked at her clock, and widened her eyes, for it was 8pm. Damn. She was late for dinner.. She hoped her mom wasn't in a finicky mood.

Ami's Mother grumpily walked down the stairs, clad in a bathrobe, and nearly shouted, "Ami!?? Where HAVE you been?? I've been SOOO worried about you. You better not have gotten into any trouble AGAIN!" She wagged a finger at Ami, who's expression had turned sheepish.

"But -- But.. Mom... I'm sorry I'm late. We were exploring our... powers. How far they go, and so forth. I lost track of time. But.. 2 friends of mine would like to come over for dinner. You haven't met our new Tomorrow Person, Boyd, but Kevin is coming with, if it's okay? I can make them something...."

"Ami! You should give me more notice than that! Oh how I wish you could talk to me in your mind sometimes. Maybe I'd understand you better.....", She trailed off.

Ami shifted from one foot to another, impatient, and muttered, "Mom... "

"Ohhh Alright! Bring 'em over. I'll be back down in a few minutes. We're having dinner that YOU were supposed to be home for.... " She strode back upstairs in a determined pace, to change.

"Mom, Thanks!!! I'll tell them to come over." She stood straight, her expression fixed, mindsent, [Boyd, Kevin, It's okay. She's a 'lil grumpy, cuz I was late for dinner, but you can come over for dinner. Anytime you're ready. ]

As I got that mental thought, I grinned. [ [We're on the way over! ] ], were Kevin and I's simulanteous thoughts toward Ami. The TP's bade us g'bye, and went their own directions, for the night. As I prepared to teleport, I got the surprise of my life! Kevin slipped his hand into my hand, as we vanished in two bursts of static. I had no time to register the shock and the surprise.

We materialized into Ami's living room, still holding hands. I felt immediately awkward and dropped Kevin's hand, with an apologetic look toward Kevin. Kevin nodded in understanding. [ I know you are new to this, so we can go at our own pace, okay, Boyd? ], was his private mental tendril on my mind.

"Mm-hmm, Kevin.", was my comment, in addition to a small smile. Ami emerged from the kitchen to see us standing in the living room. "Oh good! You're here. We're having dinner now."

Ami's Mom saw us walking into the kitchen and greeted us warmly. "Hello folks. You must be Boyd. It's nice to meet you! Kevin, how have you been? I haven't seen you around lately."

Kevin grinned, "Well, I've been a bit busy, back home -- and Boyd here, is also from my hometown too!"

Ami's Mom put her hand on her chest, and had a pleasant startled expression on her face, saying, "Really? Do your parents know about you?" I glanced away quickly and the room grew silent. Ami's Mom peered at me, and said, "What's wrong? Did I say something wrong?"

Ami put her hand on her mother's arm, and whispered in her ear, "He doesn't have any. Only a foster father that...erm.. beat him. We think it caused him to break out." She had a pitying glance on her face. She said, "Oh I'm sorry Boyd. I didn't know. Is there anyone you can stay with?"

I grew furious, my blood begain boiling, at her pitying glance. "NO there is NOT. I am ALL ALONE! Get it?" In an angry explosive burst, I vanished away from the scene. I ended up in a dark alley, somewhere, when I needed time to think. Little did I know I was to face my darkest fear.

Meanwhile, back at Ami's place:

Kevin stood there stunned at my vanishing. "Boyd?? Where did he go?" Ami looked vexed, crossing her arms, and glared at her mother. "MOM --- How COULD you do that?"

"Hey, Ami! Don't take THAT tone with me, little girl! I was just simply asking a question!" Ami growled, and looked at Kevin, for help. Kevin was deep in concentration.

Kevin was fruitlessly searching for my mental presence. Kevin and Ami glanced worriedly at each other.

"Kevin?", was Ami's plaintative question.

"I can't find him!", said Kevin with a slight ragged voice, and a tear running down his face.

Two words were uttered. "Mind Merge." Kevin nodded. Ami and Kevin put their hands up toward each other's hands, to form a circle, but not touching. A clear pink sphere began to form, to firmen into bright purple. It shimmered into the space between their arms. Ami and Kevin went into deeper rapport, closer, and closer, yet retaining their own self.

[ [ Boyd! Where are you! ] ] were their thoughts, directing the mind merge. The purple glowing orb spluttered out, as it couldn't find Boyd, knocking both TP's apart, to stagger backwards.

"Where the hell is he?", near-growled a worried Ami. Ami's Mom put her arm around Ami's shoulder, and said in a soft voice, "He's angry. He probably doesn't want to be found. I'm sure he's okay." Kevin nodded at her Mom's wisdom.

"You're right, We would know it, and I suspect *I* would, before everyone else did. I don't feel a problem, other than I can't find him.", was Kevin's quiet comment. Ami's mother looked at Kevin strangely for a second, puzzling over that last statement.

I wandered a darkened alley, which stank of urine, garbage, and other things I dared not identify, not recognizing any parts of it. I heard a footstep or two behind me, but didn't have time to react when a hand grabbed me by the shoulder, and another covered my mouth. "Don't move!" My eyes widened in terror, as I realized who it was.
