PANTOMIME THEATRE WORKSHOP

The mime-workshop is intended to introduce groups and individual amateurs of pantomime to the techniques and theory of professional mime-theatre.

The workshop will be directed by Jan Gembal, a Polish mime and specialist in the philosophy of body language, together with the International Mime-Rhapsodic Company "Mimesis" from the Principality of Liechtenstein.

LANGUAGE: Lectures will be held in English; German and Polish translations will be given simultaneously.

OBJECTIVES
The workshop offers a solid introduction to the basics of pantomime by instructing students in the fundamental principles and techniques of the art. Instructors will also aid students in discovering artistic solutions and developing their artistic skills.

a. Techniques of pantomime

- Basic expressions of hands (tradition of Marceau)
- Principles of facial expressions
- Basic attitude-expressions
- Some principles of expressing by specific movements
- Principles of composing a character
- Principles of pantomimic illusions
- The 1st and the 2nd profile-steps
- Principles of stage behaviour
- Pantomimic gymnastics
- Principles of stage lighting

b. Theory

- Naturalistic and illusory techniques of the pantomime
- Body language as the source of pantomime
- The role of imagination in theatrical perception
- The origin of European theatre
- Religious dimensions of theatre
- Personalistic conceptions of theatre
- Theology of icons and theatre
- The problem of authenticity - Acting in theatre and acting in life
- Should one play negative roles?
- Naturalistic and rhapsodic traditions in theatre

Organizers can alter the program, if needed.

The number of places is limited, so applications will be accepted in the order that they are received.

PROJECT MIMESIS
The present workshop will be continued in future. We plan to hold the following workshops twice a year (winter and summer) and will offer three levels of study: (A) basics, (B) advanced and (C) professional.

We are looking for young talented actors who are willing to establish theatrical groups in different countries and to artistically collaborate with Mimesis.
