Concept:  syncopation

Objectives:
        SWBAT define, read, perform, and identify syncopation

Materials/Preparation:
    -recording of "Russian Sailors' Dance" from The Red Poppy by Reinhold Gliere
    -the following rhythm on the board or on an overhead (does not have to be in color):

 
 

Teaching Strategies:
 
    Speech Pattern
 
    Weak beatslouder, the off-beats are stronger
    Yes that's the way that the syncopation goes
    Yes that's the way that the syncopation goes. HEY!

    1. Echo teach line-by-line, patching SB (steady beat)
    2. Speak whole pattern straight through, patching SB
    3. Speak whole pattern, following notated rhythm on board
        -T points
        -S speak and patch

    Listening
    1. (Re)introduce piece
        -Title
        -Composer
        -Background
    2. S listen to recording and listen for places where and accented note falls on a weak beat (strong beat = steady beat)
        -T points to rhythm on board
        -S patch SB
        -S identify places where accented note falls on a weak beat  (S give measure numbers; T circles given measures)
    3. Double check results; perform rhythm of main theme on the board
        -Divide into 2 groups
        -Group one patches SB
        -Group two lightly claps rhythm of main theme
        -Switch
    4. Make any corrections

    Identification and Definition
    1. "What is this rhythmic device called?" (syncopation)
    2. Define syncopation as the placement of rhythmic accents on weak beats or weak portions of the beat

    Application/ Isolation
    1. S stand, walk SB in place, and clap measures 2 and 3 on the board (containing a syncopated rhythm) over and over
    2. "Did you feel the syncopation? Describe it."
    3. S clap and speak the speech pattern while walking in small circles

    Performance with the Recording
    1. S walk SB and patch the rhythm of the main theme
    2. S patch SB and walk the rhythm of the main theme
