Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba:
The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said, "Allah has hated for you to waste the wealth (extravagance)."
Explaination
Even though expenditure of money at a tremendous rate and magnitude
qualifies as extravagance, it is not the only form of extravagance.
Needless spending of any amount of money is a waste of wealth. If I go and
buy a $20 concert ticket or a $15 ticket to a movie theater, I will risk
hearing or seeing something that I should have kept away from (hardly any
movie is free of some Haram scenes now-a-days and music is prohibited to
begin with). So, although not a lot of money is spent, the foregoing
deeds qualify as extravagance. Several examples of this sort are found in
our every day life. As muslims we should keep our eyes open, constantly
evaluate ourselves and always beg Allah to keep us on the right path. So,
next time you pull your wallet out of the rear-pocket, ask yourself, "Is
this necessary? What good will this bring? What bad can this bring?".
Narrated Al Mughira bin Shu`ba:
Allah has hated for you vain useless talk, or that you talk too much about others.
Sahih Bukhari Vol. 3, Book 41, #591.
Explaination
Types of conversations that are beneficial neither here nor in the
hereafter or conversations that are neither harmfull nor beneficial are
types of vain and useless talks. Some rather common examples are talking
about movies or movie-stars, prolonged conversations on sports or games
or politics, chating, etc. A fairly common example of talking too much
about other people (on part of students) would be evaluating the teaching
capabilities of professors for extended periods of time. Our tongue is one
of Shaitan`s best weapons against us. So, if we use it too much we may
end up mis-using it.
Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:
The Prophet (PBUH) said,"I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this," putting his index and middle fingers togather.
Explaination
Imagine having your picture taken with your favorite celebrety; imagine
having a cup of tea with shah Fahad bin Abdul `Aziz; imagine going shoping
with Gail (world`s richest man). Surely these are all once-in-a-lifetime
experiences. However, is the company of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) not a much
greater gift than all of the foregoing scenerios combined? After all, a
muslim who sees Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in his/her dream cherishes the
moment for a lifetime. So imagine sitting, standing, walking, eating and
drinking with the greatest man who ever lived. By the will of Allah, it
can happen in the hereafter if we lay the ground works in this world.
Narrated Abu Musa:
The Prophet (PBUH) said, "A faithful believer to a faithful believer is like the bricks of a wall, enforcing each other." While (saying that) the Prophet (PBUH) clasped his hands, by interlacing his fingers.
Sahih Bukhari Vol.1, Book 8, #468
Explaination
Imagine a million bricks lying on the ground. Each and every one of them
may be of top quality by itself, but a wall can not be built unless the
bricks are put together. Only now can this wall be visualized.
Similarly, even if all of us were excellent muslims by ourselves; we could
not feel the essence of Islam unless we supported one another. So, when we
see a muslim performing a good deed, we should offer our full support.
But if we see a muslim involved in something beyond the boundaries of
Islam, we should help him by trying to revert him toward the Islamic way.
Either way, we are helping/supporting our fellow brothers and sisters.
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
I never saw the Prophet (PBUH) seeking to fast on a day more (preferable to him) than this day, the day of `Ashura (10th of Muharram)
Sahih Bukhari Vol. 3, Book 31, #224
Explaination
Although to
fast on 10th of Muharram is optional Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) did emphasize it.
According to another hadith, prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was inclined toward
fasting on the 9th and the 10th of muharram. We should try to make an
effort to fast on these days this year.
Narrated Abdullah:
I asked the Prophet(P.B.U.H.), "which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times."
Explaination
This Hadith shows that where prayer is among the basic duties of the muslim, to offer prayers at their earliest times is not without its own significance; for what have we all been created for but to please Allah? To take an everyday example; suppose I have a class from 3:30 to 4:30, and
